Description

Often overlooked, one can forget the importance of the 996, as it was Porsche's first non-air cooled 911, so somewhat of a trail blazer for the company.

As beloved as the 993 was, for environment reasons in addition to the cost of manufacturer, the air-cooled model design finally had to give way.

Apart from the obvious DNA there isn't a nut or bolt that is carried over from the air cooled model, yet the shape is certainly smoother and it's slightly longer and wider.

Despite reservations from the air-cooled diehards, sales were buoyant; supply and demand meant that 'Zuffenhausen' was turning out 996's at almost double the rate of the old 993, thus by the time a facelift 996. 2 appeared in 2001, the continued demand for the 993 and the availability of earlier high mileage 996. 1 cars, saw prices soften.

Thankfully a slow reappraisal of its many virtues along with continued prominence of the GT2, GT3 and Turbo models, saw prices of the C2&4 start to harden, with evidently nowadays, the best looked after low mileage cars now still very much in demand.

This low mileage manual 2002 996. 2 C4 is absolutely such a car.

Supplied via AFN Guildford and finished perhaps in the best combination of basalt black with black hide... as you can see from the photographs, its teeming with factory options.

Prior to its purchase the last owner sensibly asked Russell Lewis of renowned Porsche specialist 'RSR Ltd' to undertake an inspection.

From his notes one can see a new IMS ceramic bearing was fitted 6, 000 mile ago along with a new clutch too. Further checks happily revealed that ECU records showed no engine revs in range 2 nor any outstanding faults codes.

Unsurprisingly, once in receipt of this positive inspection/ written report, shaking hands was a 'no brainer'.

Overall exterior condition is exceptional, with I notice just the front bumper having been previously painted, again not unusual given it becomes a 'beacon' for road debris.

Likewise the interior, again in exceptional condition; not surprising really given the low mileage. Nevertheless, one can see from various painted and aluminium interior surfaces, often scratched or gouged by keys and alike, here all are as good as new.

There's certainly no complaints about its performance nor handling either, being a C4, it's both agile and extremely sure footed... given the sports exhaust option was ticked, it sounds great too.

In conclusion, well best left to Russell Lewis's summary, 'it's very difficult to find any fault with this vehicle. I cannot foresee any major expenditure in the near future and therefore see no reason not to purchase'.

Sounds like a slam dunk to me!
