Description
1972 Gilbern Invader – Wales’ most famous car.
The Invader is a very handsome car with overtones of Bertone’s Alfa Romeo Guilia GTV and with a mere 603 made a rather exclusive one too.
This Invader MkII is in very good condition indeed and has benefited from much recent expenditure to make it a reliable and fast Grand Tourer.
The body is excellent with very good red paintwork. There is the odd blemish but there is no microblistering which is so often the case with fibreglass cars.
The chassis is in very good order. Recent work includes a rebuild of the front suspension, steering, brakes and twin tank fuel system. A new clutch has been fitted and also braided brake hoses, new shock absorbers, electronic ignition, an uprated radiator, Kenlowe fan and a stainless steel exhaust.
The interior is in very good condition with reupholstered front seats.
The Essex V6 provides plenty of performance and the overdrive enables relaxed cruising. On our test drive the car started easily and performed well. There is lots of urge yet the engine remains very flexible.
All the gauges work correctly including the clock as do the electric windows.
Presently the Gilbern sits on after market wheels but the original wheels come with the car, albeit in need of refurbishment.
There is a comprehensive file with the car containing a large number of receipts and an Owner’s Handbook.
In our opinion the Gilbern Invader is a very underrated car and values are now creeping up with good examples like this one very hard to find. The Invader MkII represents the best of the breed with the improved chassis and brakes but without the styling errors of the MkIII.
