Description
History:
As the successor to the Pagoda, Mercedes Benz developed a completely new model. The designer, who was already responsible for the historically valuable models of the 500K and the famous 300SL, created this modern and safe-looking body. The 107 series remained in production for around 18 years and was offered in Europe with a total of seven different engines. This 280SL belongs to the last series with the proven 6-cylinder engine with double overhead camshaft. The vehicle was first owned in Germany and was imported to Switzerland around 10 years ago. The existing Mercedes Benz maintenance booklet confirms the service care since delivery. The exceptionally well-maintained example has never been welded and still has its white stone chip protection in the underbody.
Bodywork and paintwork:
The paintwork is extremely original and well maintained. With a 3-phase treatment, the paintwork surface can be restored to near new condition. The bodywork is undamaged, only the driver's door was repainted at a time unknown to us (over 15 years ago). The 280SL also includes a hardtop in mint condition.
Interior:
The original leather was restored in 2018 and professionally maintained again in 2023. The entire interior is original and very well maintained. Only the floor carpet on the driver's side has non-removable traces of use. Hardly available anymore, the contemporary Becker car radio with cassette, as it could be ordered for this series at the time. The soft top was renewed in 2016, closes perfectly and seals the interior.
Engine and mechanics:
The solid mechanics were regularly maintained and serviced by all previous owners. The last veteran's inspection was completed in September 2021 without any complaints. A comprehensive inspection was carried out at Goodtimer in May 2024.
Chassis:
Chassis and brakes function perfectly. In particular, the rare and very elegant steel wheels with the painted chrome caps give this example an unmistakable charm.
Driving experience:
The 280SL is a marvellous cruiser that can be used for very long journeys. Even the boot offers so much space that you can go on holiday with it. The automatic gearbox shifts smoothly and everything works as it should for a Mercedes convertible. Last but not least, this example was equipped by its first owner with options that were very expensive at the time, such as air conditioning (with adjustable automatic transmission!) and electric windows. The optional wind deflector prevents hair from being blown away and also protects the driver and front passenger.
Recommendation:
If you are looking for a convertible from this model series in exceptionally well-kept condition, you will have a lot of fun with this car. The comfort features, the relatively low mileage of 144, 000 kilometres and, finally, the low maintenance costs ensure that this model retains its value.
