Description

Mercedes' gorgeous two-seat convertible ruled the 1990s and is a new classic that's poised to significantly increase in value!

The R129-generation SL debuted for the 1990 model year to tremendous pent-up demand.

Its predecessor, the R107, had languished in production for 18 long years, and the new model was a quantum leap in design, engineering, safety, and performance.

Delayed nearly a decade while Mercedes focused on its new small sedans (the 190E and 300E), Bruno Sacco's R129 matured in the studio and emerged as a timeless, sophisticated, and impossibly elegant triumph of industrial design.

Better yet, the R129 was as much substance as style, with safety and technical innovations that were a decade or more ahead of most every other car on the road.

ABOUT THIS CAR

 Beautiful colour... Beautiful overall condition.
Imported from Japan first registered in New Zealand in 1998.
This model was a baller's car when new and remains one now.
The electrically adjustable rear view mirror is a perfect example of how Mercedes was on top of the world in the early '90s.
This car has magnesium seat frames with integrated seatbelts and power headrests. T
The SL was designed to be future-proof. All the tech went to people who didn't appreciate it, because they were wealthy and old and bought it because every touch point was full of sophistication, mechanical and otherwise.
It's mind-blowing how inexpensive these cars are now given how expensive they once were... but not for long. There will soon enough come a time, where you wish you bought this car a few years earlier... and NOW is the time to get into these.
Comes with quite a few records - looks to be a well serviced vehicle.
Body is clean and straight and paint is very good.
Interior is in very good factory condition - everything seems to work as it should.
Beneath that automatic folding top, the car’s interior is a product of its time. An early climate control system and lower centre console designed to hold cassette tapes are just two of the touches that qualify the R129 as a classic today. Or a modern classic, we should say. Because, while it may still lack the allure of some of the earlier SL models, it’s also wildly more affordable.
 Comes with good service history.
Comfort, interior, Performance, Value - everything in this car is 10 out of 10. This is without a doubt one of the best cars Mercedes ever built. One has to drive it to appreciate it, and to this day, remains quite the head turner.
Fabulous engine with a classic rumble and horsepower to snap your neck. Passing on the highway is a breeze and only requires a moderate level of nerve.
NOTE: This is not an AMG model.

If you had to pick one convertible to represent the 1990s, the SL500 would be the favorite based on its pop-culture profile alone.

It's all about the driving. And whether you pick the SL with its letters positioned after the number denoting the engine (1990-1993) or the SL with the letters positioned before the numbers (1994-2002), any well-maintained R129, like this one, should provide a dignified driving experience.

In fact, Princess Diana’s choice in motors is the most memorable among the royal family. In 1991, having tired of her stately Jaguar XJS, the People’s Princess traded it in for something new. Her choice sparked outcry, for it was the first time a British royal had not opted for a British car. What’s more, it was German. But we remain firm defenders of Di’s favoured wheels; the inimitable, unstoppable Mercedes-Benz R129 SL.

A sound investment, then, now and in future.

Will be sold WOF'd and Registered IF sold in New Zealand.
