EXTERIOR
Based on the Defender and produced by Land Rover exclusively for the Ministry of Defence, the Wolf was a purpose-built military vehicle designed for use in the field. The MoD’s fleet included a few different Wolf variants including 90 and 110 chassis vehicles in either hardtop or soft-top specification. All were equipped with a heavy-duty chassis, a stronger rear axle, tougher wheels, power-assisted steering, and 24-volt electrics. The 90 soft-top featured here is further equipped with the sought-after factory Remus package meaning extra roll over protection, anti-vibration acoustic matting, and full underseal/ cavity waxing of the chassis and bulkhead.
With only 13k combat-free miles under its belt this particular example is remarkably well preserved. The original paintwork, although lightly patinated from the sun, presents in generally excellent condition, and we’re pleased to report that the original PVC Wolf hood is also still fitted. Having clearly led a sheltered life she’s straight along both sides with no notable dents, scuffs, or scratches to either the body, bumpers, or plastic wheel arch trims. Some minor wear and tear is evident and to be expected given the utilitarian nature of the vehicle but, unlike many others out there, this one remains undamaged, unmolested, and ready to show – a real unicorn in Wolf’s clothing! The spare wheel has been relocated to the bonnet but the original carrier is included should the new owner wish re-mount it on the nearside.
INTERIOR
Sitting inside there really is no doubt that you’re behind the wheel of a low mileage example. Everything is clean and tidy with commonly worn areas such as the rubber mats, vinyl seats, and dash all in fantastic condition with no signs of heavy use. On its arrival at 4 Star we were also very impressed with just how many of the original military features and details are still present inside the car; everything from the roll cage complete with machine gun mount, to the light switch with convoy mode setting – it’s all there. The rear seats are also in fine order, again having seen minimal usage.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
Barely run-in with only 13k miles the hardy 2. 5-litre 300 TDI remains in excellent fettle. The last service was carried out in August 2024 and prior to this, in December 2023, the car received two new front swivel units and complete hub rebuilds. Since leaving the military the car has been regularly maintained by each of its owners and it has also been looked after by marque specialist Darryl Burdfield, mechanic for The Dunsfold Collection (the largest collection of Land Rovers in the world). The timing belt was replaced in March 2021, and in 2024 a new fuel tank and lift pump were fitted. For additional peace of mind, the car further benefits from the installation of a Sterling 24v immobiliser.
HISTORY FILE
The accompanying BMI heritage certificate shows the build date of this one to be 6th November 1996. Along with the date of despatch this official document confirms the Wolf’s factory build spec and stamped numbers. An original right-hand drive vehicle built to military specification for use by the MoD, the car has seen only 3 subsequent private owners. Given the potentially sensitive nature of its early life there is a limited amount of paperwork from this time, but a selection of recent documents outlines the car’s maintenance history under private ownership. The history file is complete with the original vinyl document wallet, a spare key, and the current V5C showing only 3 former keepers.
