Description

This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Iconic Sale at Race Retro 2025 - Competition Cars on Saturday the 22nd of February, Stoneleigh Park, Stoneleigh Rd, Coventry, CV8 2LG. Originally conceived to meet motorsport ‘homologation’ rules the Porsche 911 (993) GT2 was produced in a very limited production run between 1995-96 and took the flagship 993 Turbo to a new level, whilst reverting from the 959-derived 4-wheel-drive to a traditional rear-wheel-drive configuration to meet those GT2 regulations.
The GT2's performance-oriented bodywork featured lightweight aluminium doors, front trunk lid, and a very aggressive spoiler package with a front air splitter including up-turned canards and a huge bi-plane rear-deck-mounted wing incorporating air ducts that fed the intercoolers. Model-specific, 18-inch multi-piece Speedline alloy wheels with Aluminium outer rims and Magnesium centres filled the wide bolt-on fibreglass wheel arches. In road-going form, the GT2 was an impressive cocktail with 430bhp, 457lb. ft of torque, 0-60 in 3. 9 seconds and 190mph.
Prior to production commencing fully, Porsche decided to build a small number of race-focussed GT2s to be known as the ‘GT2R’. According to Factory Build Records, the allocated final part of the VIN numbers ran from #393061 to #393105 with one missing so it appears that only 43 of these very special, factory-built racers were completed. Construction started in late 1994, finishing in mid-1995, so the car on offer here, #393094, would have been built in 1995 which coincides with its stated production date of 12th July 1995.
#393094 was originally ordered as a GT2-specification race car, but with the correct paperwork for road registration. It’s powered by a (recently overhauled), numbers-matching, twin-turbocharged 3. 6-litre M64/ 81 flat-six, producing up to 450bhp and 479lb-ft of torque, driving the rear wheels through a six-speed G50/ 54 close-ratio manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential.
It features several high-performance components, including a single Recaro bucket seat with Sabelt harness, Alcantara-clad MOMO steering wheel, welded-in roll cage, a Premier Racing 100-litre fuel cell, and a set of 18-inch wheels with central connectors. The car also has racing specification suspension, a fully adjustable rear wing, upgraded KKK turbos, high-lift camshafts, an extra oil-cooler, a bespoke exhaust, and the Tag Electronics ECU, which was reportedly only ever fitted to the GT2R, and which has recently been serviced by McLaren. The wheel arches are wider than those on the standard 993 Turbo, meaning it can fit 295-section rear tyres and 265-section front items, maximising grip. #393094 also has an OEM carbon flat-floor kit, requiring the fitment of upgraded rear arches and upper wing sections, which were installed after it left the factory.
Upon completion, it was shipped to Nagoya in Japan and subsequently relocated to Tokyo. During its time in Japan, it was only ever driven on the road, or at Porsche Japan-organised track-days. In 2017, it was imported to the UK, registered with the DVLA in May of that year and, since then, has been very well-maintained and kept in secure storage. Accompanying the vehicle is a well-organised history file, containing its specification summary, origin information, service history, Japanese Export Certificate, HMRC and DVLA import documents, an inspection report and a collection of maintenance invoices.
The Tag Electronics ECU has recently been serviced by McLaren, whose technicians also replaced the battery, missing resistors, and a capacitor. The car itself was last serviced, prior to arriving in the UK, in May 2015 at 7, 144km, where the crank-sensor and spark plugs were changed. In March 2014 at 6, 068km, the front and rear brake discs and pads were replaced, along with a driveshaft. Since arriving in the UK in 2017, it has been professionally stored, with all work carried out to an impeccable standard, including an engine overhaul by Neil Bainbridge at BS Motorsport in May 2024, in preparation for the sale. The most recent MOT test was on 3rd March 2017 at 7, 842km, which was a clean pass with no advisories or defects.
The Grand Prix White paintwork presents superbly and we understand was refreshed to an obviously high-standard in the past and the stripped-out cabin is equally impressive with only minor wear on the dashboard trim and steering wheel, in keeping with the car’s age.
This sensational Porsche 911 (993) GT2R is one of just 43 examples of the legendary, factory-built race car, and one of only a handful to be registered for road use. Originally manufactured in Stuttgart, before being exported to Japan and subsequently the UK, it has never been raced and has reportedly only ever been driven on the road or at track-days organised by Porsche Japan. Having been very well-maintained, this exceptional and sought-after 911 is now ready to join a collection of rare Porsche models or be enjoyed at prestigious Historic Motorsport events worldwide.
