The groundbreaking Bentley Continental GT of 2003 was one of the first Bentleys produced under Volkswagen ownership. Its introduction marked a significant change of policy for Bentley; although still hand assembled to a degree, it was built using mass-production techniques and retailed at approximately half the price of the preceding Continental R, extending the prospect of Bentley ownership so a much wider market.
The Continental GT was powered a twin-turbocharged version of the 6. 0-litre W12 engine, also found in other VW Group products, which drove via a six-speed semi-automatic gearbox and permanent four-wheel drive. With 552bhp on tap, this mighty power unit was capable of propelling the two-ton Continental GT to 100km/ h (62mph) in 4. 8 seconds on its way to a top speed of 318km/ h (197mph). The original Continental GT had spawned a plethora of related models, including a Flying Spur saloon and GT Convertible.
Introduced for 2006, the GTC featured the same distinctive mesh front grille and quartet of circular headlamps as its Continental siblings, while the convertible hood was all but invisible when folded down, although accommodating it meant reducing the available boot space. Additional chassis bracing ensured that the GTC was not lacking in torsional stiffness when compared with the coupé. Although the GTC was slightly heavier than its closed cousin as a result, the mighty W12 engine shrugged off the handicap, turning in a 0-60mph (0-97km/ h) time only a tenth of a second slower, while the top speed was down by only a couple of miles per hour.
A left-hand drive example delivered new in the UK, this particular GTC was sold new to our vendor following its PDI carried out on 25th September 2007 at 18 miles. The car is finished in light blue metallic with tan upholstery, blue top to the dashboard, and blue convertible hood. The Bentley was serviced by Jack Barclay on 17th September 2008 at 390 miles; in 2009 at 702 miles; in 2010 at 1, 055 miles; and in 2012 at 1, 723 miles. In 2018 RR&B Ltd carried out a service at 1, 825 miles, which is the current odometer reading. The car is offered for recommissioning having been stored since it was last serviced in 2018 (service book available), though running and driving. The car is listed as having one previous keeper on the V5C, though this is a one owner from new example. The service book is available, however interested parties should note the car is supplied with one key. The private UK registration is currently being retained by the seller and the car will be offered with a UK age related registration document, which will follow post sale.
All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams Motorcycles website for all pertinent auction information.
