Description
Principal Facts
We are delighted to offer for sale a stunning example of the 220SEb Cabriolet. Registered new in March 1966, this luxurious four-seater has lived a charmed life at the hands of just four previous keepers, all of whom have done a wonderful job of preserving this rare example.
Finished in its original colour scheme of Silver Grey Metallic with Blue Leather interior, this show-stopping W111 has enjoyed a stint on display at Mercedes Benz World in recent years – an accolade reserved for only the very best examples of the marque.
Condition
Subject to an extensive nut and bolt restoration by Border Reivers of Glasgow and backed up by countless invoices for parts and labour totalling over £50, 000, this cabriolet is comfortably one of the best we’ve ever seen.
The beautifully bright paintwork and chrome are immaculate, the deep blue leather upholstery feels as good as new, as do the wood veneers throughout the interior. Mechanically the car wants for nothing, having undergone a full engine overhaul early in 2024 and a gearbox rebuild in 2019. From behind the wheel our 220SEb feels wonderfully smooth in all aspects of the driving experience – the recent work to the engine and transmission is evident making this an extremely enjoyable car to pilot on any road.
History
Accompanying this car is a sizeable history file, meticulously curated by former keepers to document the life of the car from day one right through to the present. Aside from the aforementioned stack of invoices pertaining to the restoration, we have an original set of booklets with stamped service history showing the Pre-Delivery Inspection, and subsequent services up to 1979 and 36, 031 miles – all completed by Mercedes Benz of Brentford.
Additionally, there are original sales brochures, a parts catalogue, copies of the Mercedes Benz Data Card, MOTs going back to 1982 and even copies of former registration documents detailing the ownership journey.
Originally supplied to Mr L Edwards in 1966, he kept the car until 1983 when ownership moved to Mr P Standfield, owner of Martonmere Autos Ltd. In 1996 Mr Standfield switched the registered keeper from his business to his private name and held on to the car until 2009 when Tom Fitzsimmons of Border Reivers Cars became the next custodian. Border Reivers carried out the detailed restoration work over several years, the quality evident thanks to the fastidious approach of Tom and his team. In 2017 they sold the car to Mr. D Holliday who spared no expense in preserving his newly restored Benz.
Summary
Despite the name, we don’t just do SL’s here – we’re open to the idea of a big four-seat cabriolet wearing the three-pointed star. It’s the perfect vehicle for wafting along the lanes with the family on a summer’s day in total comfort. A truly compelling way to make memories with, and inspire, the next generation of classic car enthusiasts. Registration number available separately.
