How beautiful is this? Have you ever seen this colour on an R107? This is a 1981 Mercedes-Benz 380SL, finished in the rare combination of China Blue with Blue Fabric Interior and Blue Soft Top. What is interesting is that the original owner specified the colour coded hubcaps that came with the earlier Pagoda models, giving this a really classic look! She has covered 116k Miles from new and is in a lovely condition!
In 1971 Mercedes-Benz launched a new range of convertible sports cars to replace the much loved Pagoda. Longer and wider than its predecessor the new R107 chassis featured front and rear crumple zones to meet the latest crash protection standards and was, inevitably, heavier. Like its forebears the newcomer was more sports-tourer than outright sports car and came equipped with all-independent suspension. At first fitted with 3. 5 and 4. 5 litre V8 engines Mercedes nimbly responded to the 1973 oil crisis by introducing a 2. 8 litre model in October 1974. Bursting onto the scene in 1980, the 380SL was a replacement for the 280SL with a revised V8 engine focused on fuel efficiency rather than out and out power. The 380SL would continue until 1985 where it would be replaced by the 420SL. This 380SL’s 3. 8-litre, 215bhp and 221lb/ ft of torque straight-six engine delivers a top speed of 134mph, which is mightily impressive for a car that was designed for comfort rather than speed.
Our car was supplied new by Woking Motors, the Official Mercedes-Benz dealer in Hersham, Surrey, we have all the original Book Pack that came with the car including the original Service Book with 21 stamps in it. She has only had four previous owners from new, the last for 7 years. Our car has some desirable options such as the Automatic Gearbox, Electric Windows and Colour Coded Hard Top. The soft top has been replaced and very good. There is a huge service history with hundreds of invoices going back to nearly new. The interior is very nice and the paintwork is very good indeed with only minor scruffy areas to attend to. The whole condition of the car is beautiful and quite amazing at this price point. All in all, a lovely 380SL, the bigger engined one, in an amazing rare colour scheme, freshly serviced and ready for her new home! This is a winter price, it would be significantly more when the sun comes out next year!
