In the 1990s Chrysler’s thoughts turned towards making an MPV on the platform used for the Neon small saloon. This was a time when retro-styling was gaining a foothold, breeding the new VW Beetle and BMW’s Mini amongst others. Penned by young designer Bryan Nesbitt and combining 1940s and hot rod styling cues on the outside with a practical MPV interior, Chrysler launched the PT Cruiser in the US in 2000. It certainly hit the mark on that side of the Atlantic, winning both Motor Trend magazine’s Car of the Year and North American Car of the Year in 2001. Although not quite the same hit here in the UK, it did gain quite a devoted following. Over a ten year life span, 1. 35 million PT Cruisers were made with the final car rolling off the production line in 2010.
We are delighted to offer this 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser Classic in Dark Plum with dark grey velour interior. First registered on 1st September 2004, the car is fitted with the popular 2-litre engine and manual gearbox combination. It has had just one former keeper and has averaged less than 1, 000 miles a year. The mileage is backed up by the MOT history which shows minimal advisories over the years and none on the last ticket. There were a few issues at the time of the last MOT which we understand were addressed and it now has an advisory free ticket through to August next year. There is an invoice for 4 new tyres and a front wiper blade and the vendor advises us that he has had the wheel sensors replaced.
It takes only a look at this PT Cruiser to realise it has been cherished. The paintwork is in great condition with just a few scratches on the rear bumper and one on the offside door to speak of. A paint correction would undoubtedly take it to the next level. The wheel trims are similarly good and free from kerbing. Inside, the two body colour panels lift the dark plastic dashboard and the white cue-ball gear knob injects a bit of fun to proceedings. The interior is very clean and, indeed, almost factory fresh as you might expect with such minimal mileage. There are no modifications to the original specification in here. The plastics are in great shape and the carpets have been protected by PT Cruiser branded mats. The seats are free from stains, rips and tears. Specification for these cars was high and included electric windows all round, electric mirrors, CD player and central locking. The boot is clean and present is the novel 5-position rear parcel shelf, which with the assistance of a fold down leg was designed to double as a table.
The car comes with its full book pack, V5C, old MOTs and, pleasingly, the original purchase receipt from All Electric Garages in Sutton Coldfield. The original dealer registration plates are also still in place.
PT Cruisers are quirky cars with a genuine practical side to them. Low numbers and their use as family hacks means there are few survivors left on UK roads. We would guess that this could well be the finest example in country and, if this is your sort of car, this is the one you want.
