Meet Sammy the Samba, a 1966 VW 21-Window that comes with a story as colourful as its past owners. Imported to the UK in 2006 by the current owner, this unique van was purchased from San Francisco’s own Manny the Hippie—famed for his street interview with David Letterman during Late Night’s early Bay Area days and his subsequent stint as the show’s film reviewer. Manny, a true free spirit, would tow Sammy behind a classic yellow school bus and cruise the streets in style. To this day, he remains a local celebrity, entertaining crowds and attending rallies. The current owner’s acquisition was marked by a leap of faith: wiring funds to one of Manny’s friends, as Manny didn’t have a bank account—a testament to his true hippie lifestyle.
Sammy arrived in the UK and underwent minimal restoration, with only light welding needed. The doors, engine lid, and tailgate are original, showcasing the van’s authentic heritage. In 2023, Sammy received a new interior, adding modern comfort to its vintage charm. Under the engine lid, the van runs on a strong 1835cc engine, with modified reduction boxes from its time in the US to handle the added power. Over the past 19 years, Sammy has proven its reliability on trips to Paris, countless VW shows across the UK, and even chauffeuring the current owner’s daughters to their proms.
Aside from the occasional coil failure, this Samba has never let its owners down. Features like safari windows and a rear window jail bar add to its nostalgic appeal, together with its iconic full-length rag top & 8 skylight windows, that really make a samba stand out from the rest. All rubber seals have been replaced with new ones, and the van received a full oil change last year.
