The first vehicle to bear the Porsche name, the 356 ‘No. 1’ Roadster, received it’s street certification on June 8th 1948. The rest, as they say, is history..
To mark 70 years of Porsche sports cars, in June 2018 twenty special edition restorations were commissioned by Porsche Cars GB. Porsche GB cherry picked some of the most iconic models that have been produced, representing half a century of evolution from the Stuttgart marque, covering a spread of front-engine, mid-engine and rear-engine sports cars.
The lineup of cars included:
1970 Porsche 914 1. 7 litre Manual Coupe
1981 Porsche 924 Turbo Manual Coupe
1982 Porsche 911 SC Manual Coupe G-Model
1986 Porsche 944 Turbo Manual Coupe
1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 (C4) Manual Coupe 964-series
1993 Porsche 928 GT Manual Coupe
1996 Porsche 968 Sport Manual Coupe
1996 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 (C4) Manual Coupe 993-series
1999 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 (C2) Manual Coupe 996-series
2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Manual Coupe 996-series
Plus a series of ten 986 Porsche Boxster S:
2000 Porsche Boxster S 3. 2 Manual Convertible 986-series (four in total)
2001 Porsche Boxster S 3. 2 Manual Convertible 986-series (five in total)
2002 Porsche Boxster S 3. 2 Manual Convertible 986-series (one produced)
Each car underwent a bare metal restoration and was beautifully finished in a special ‘Liquid Metal’ silver metallic paint (Porsche Colour Code S8), which was developed especially for the Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid hypercar. A full engine rebuild, using a new ‘short block engine’ was also carried out to selected models (including this example.)
This particular 986 3. 2L Manual S was originally manufactured in 2001, in silver. Now re-sprayed in the bespoke ‘Liquid Metal’ silver metallic developed for and applied exclusively to the range-topping Porsche 918 Spyder). It was then fully restored by Porsche's Classic Restoration Team as part of the 70th Anniversary project, with an exhaustive approach to detail that involved a bare-metal body restoration, complete overhaul of every single component, and a complete engine rebuild. Where possible during the restoration Porsche re-conditioned original parts to preserve the originality of the car, and where necessary replacement Porsche Classic Genuine parts were used to ensure performance and longevity. The car is a genuine example of the oft-overused term “better-than-new”, with incredible attention to every aspect of its restoration.
In addition to the stunning Liquid Metal paint, the car features a bespoke black interior, complete with Porsche Classic-branded cloth trim, a ‘70 years of Porsche’ commemorative plaque, and a special 70th Anniversary graphic on the exterior. Porsche’s craftsmanship is evident throughout, with a focus on both aesthetics and performance. Each of these 70th Anniversary models is equipped with a manual gearbox, aligning with Porsche’s sports car ethos while enhancing the driving experience.
The rebuilt 3. 2-litre flat-six engine of the Boxster S delivers a potent 258 bhp, offering a brilliant balance of power and agility in true Porsche fashion. The mid-engine layout provides exceptional handling, offering a driving experience that is both communicative and connected, making it one of the most engaging roadsters on the market.
After the restorations were complete, all 20 of the cars were displayed at the 2018 NEC Classic Car Show, as the flagship of Porsche’s tribute to 70 years of sports car heritage. The special restorations went on sale later in the year with would-be customers registering interest for the cars at the show.
Given its role as part of Porsche’s Classic Restoration Programme and the rarity of these anniversary editions, this tribute to Porsche’s 70 years of innovation would make a great addition to any Porsche collection, or simply if you are seeking a fantastic example of modern Porsche engineering with great driving characteristics and usability.
Supplied with its original commemorative 70th Anniversary Porsche leather folder, including matching numbered VIN plaque, foreword from Porsche cars GB Managing director, Marcus Eckermann and documentation listing the restoration work and the replacement parts, carried out by Porsche Centre Bournemouth. A replacement service book shows 3x specialist stamps since the restoration in 2018, including most recently April 2024 at Welsh Porsche Specialists.
This classic vehicle will be coming to auction with Dore & Rees Auctions on Wednesday 4th December at Five Zeroes Supercars Ltd, Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire. For further information please contact the Motoring department.
