Start, Runs and Drives.

19 Silver Crests are known, this one is probably the last one built.

The dark red paint harmonizes very well with the black fenders, the interior is made of wine red leather and red carpet. The seat cushions have been reupholstered, it has a working sunroof, plenty of interior space and newer tires. This car has been serviced and is fully roadworthy, it even has German documents. But it is an older restoration, some signs of wear are visible inside and out. Interesting feature: the windows at the front can be pushed back a few cm using the crank (smoker window?).

The history is largely known and there is a whole folder with invoices etc.

An Austin 3 liter engine was used for a few years, but the correct engine with the correct number was rebuilt and reinstalled. It is the OHV in-line six-cylinder with 2362 cm3, the 3-carburettor version and 50 KW.

The chassis has the Alvis independent suspension at the front and a rigid axle with semi-elliptical springs at the rear. An electric fan with an adjustable thermostat has been retrofitted, but the radiator has been overhauled.

Delivered to Hartwells of Bournemouth on December 23, 1936, it was registered as CRU 81 by Sydney James Rees from Bournemouth on December 18, 1936. Mr. Rees from "The Hawthorns" also had the chassis number 13275.

From September 28th, 1948 it was registered to Walter Broderik Bullock Christchurch, Hampshire, then in Bournemouth, in Dorset and in Sussex. 1989 - 1994 it was rebuilt by Malcom. R. Hardiman" from Wokingham, Berkshire. The car was then with various AOC members in York, including once at a wedding service.

In the register of the "Alvisarchive", where this car is recorded, you can also find Michael Mark's article in 1994 (Bulletin 417), in which he describes his enthusiasm for the Silver Crest:

"One incident underlines the quality of the design - whilst I had the Alvis, the opportunity arose to sample a 1939 MX Overdrive Bentley. I drove the Bentley from Derby to Stockton but long before I got back to Derby I realized, despite its quieter gear , I wouldn't change it for the Alvis. The Silver Crest's suspension was much superior. It had none of the Bentley's writhing front wings and P100s over bad road surfaces, and its general comfort was - to my surprise - better."
