The Triumph Spitfire Mark IV, introduced in 1970, marked a significant evolution in the history of Triumph’s popular two-seater roadster. Originally designed by the acclaimed Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti, the Spitfire had been a favourite for its compact size, sporty handling, and relatively affordable price. The Mk4 brought a more modernized appearance with a redesigned, sleeker front end, and a tail reminiscent of the larger Triumph Stag, aiming to appeal to a broader market. Mechanically, it benefited from a revised rear suspension setup, which significantly improved handling and stability over previous models, addressing criticisms of the earlier swing-axle design. The Mk4 was also equipped with a 1, 296cc inline-four engine, delivering a modest but fun output that paired well with its lightweight construction, offering spirited driving experiences at lower speeds. This model stayed in production until 1974, setting the stage for the final evolution, the Spitfire 1500.
We are delighted to offer this 1972 Triumph Spitfire 1300 Mark IV in Pageant Blue with matching Blue upholstery and door cards. First registered in October 1972, the little Triumph was bought by our vendor in the Summer of 2022 and he immediately set about improving what was already a strong example. We are grateful to the vendor for the following information:-
“Since buying it the car has had a complete overhaul:-
New Battery
Wiring loom replaced
New brakes
Mag wheel replaced with original steel wheels
White wall tyres replaced with four new tyres
Replacement gear linkage kit fitted
Serviced and MOT”
Outside, the car presents well - Pageant Blue being a vibrant shade that perfectly captures the fun spirit of the Spitfire. The recently replaced wheels are period-correct, in lovely condition and wearing fresh rubber. There are a few marks over the offside rear arch and some patination to the chrome bumpers but the bodywork is extremely nice and this is not your usual rusty example. We would always encourage you to view the car in person at our purpose-built facility in Cheshire and assess the condition yourself but we doubt you’ll be disappointed. Inside is also nice with the blue vinyl only having minimal signs of wear. It has been fitted with a lovely Mountney steering wheel and a modern stereo.
The car comes with a V5C, a bundle of invoices stretching back to 1995, a collection of old MOTs and a car cover.
We live in a world where opportunities to drive fast are few and far between. However, little roadsters like the Spitfire present an opportunity to have tons of fun at sensible speeds that won’t put your licence at risk. They are simple with good parts availability and make ideal starter classics.
