Description

Build by one man in the 80s from Austin Allego components.

HISTORY
Built by John Brazier from Bristol over 3 years (1985-1988), costing £3000 and using marine ply, Brazilian mahogany and ash wood plus over 1000 brass wood-screws! John is an ex-Rolls Royce apprentice and was a woodwork teacher in the 80s when he built the car. First MOTed and registered on 1st April 1988 and used as the family car for 13 years until John became ill and the car was stored away. Sold by the family in September 2023 and recommissioned by Classic Cars of Bath to the tune of £6, 500. The recommission included a set of 6 new tyres, the addition of some extra side lights and reflectors, various electrical fixes, replacement of one rear subframe and restoration of the other including new trumpets, cones, bolts and fixings plus new brake pipes, components, fluids and grease nipples (plus new front discs and pads). One of the sliding ‘windoors’ was missing so a new one was made by a local glass specialist and perfectly matches the rest of the glass. The engine was serviced with new oil, new filters, cooling system flush, new water pipes and clips, a new battery was fitted, a condenser and coil, plugs, points and fan belt replaced. The carb was also rebuilt and the fuel system was flushed clean. The car now drives beautifully with an MOT until February 2025 – the only advisory is slow headlamp illumination which is a quirk of the car. The Hustler was featured in many contemporary magazines and newspapers, copies of which come with the car along with copies of some of the plans to construct the car from Interstyl (William Towns’ company) and an electrical diagram for this specific car. The mileage reads 42, 620 miles and we have no reason to doubt this is correct.

SPECIFICATION
Made from marine plywood and mahogany type woods for the body structure with an ash roll bar. John hand made the steering wheel (a quartic Allegro style wheel made from 36 pieces of wood), rear view mirror, hand brake, gear knob, wing mirrors, centre caps (not currently on the car but present) and roof rails. The mechanical components consist of 3 Mini subframes (one reversed to prevent wheel scrub on the rear) and a 1300cc Allegro (A Series) engine and 4-speed gearbox. The rear wheels all work off the handbrake, and the fronts have discs with servo. There is a hidden battery cut-off switch and locking wheel nuts. The roof has two opening ‘sunroofs’ that work off a hinge, the roof has roof-rails and a discreet rear spoiler. The car seats 9 – 2 in the front, 3 in the middle and 4 in the rear sitting sideways. The centre seats also fold down. Wheels are Cosmic and have been on the car from new – the spare is also a Cosmic wheel. Single wiper, a radio cassette hidden in a cubby hole with speakers and a roof aerial. Allegro front seats that tilt to allow rear passengers to enter, front and rear seat belts, heating system designed by John, hatchback rear glass door, sliding front ‘windoors’. The carpets are plush household grade and make the interior look like a 1980s pub!

CONDITION
In amazing condition throughout and beautifully engineered by Mr Towns and carefully and thoroughly built by John Brazier with his own individual flourishes everywhere. The engine bay is tidy and well thought out with wiring carefully placed, the wood is still looking fine with no damage or wood-worm (bar a small amount of water damage to the left of the front number plate), the interior is still looking great with the Allegro seats still in excellent shape. The glass is unmarked with no scratches and the wheels are recently refurbished with newly sourced ‘Cosmic’ centre caps. Tyres are new all round with plenty of tread. Trust us, this car will get you noticed! It gathers a crowd of admirers where ever it goes and would make a perfect promotional tool for any business or a great beach or yacht car. We have a full bunch of keys and the car has a clear Motor Check certificate. Road tax is £210 and this car will be tax, MOT and ULEZ exempt in 2028.
