Description
From its debut at Shelsley Walsh in the Summer of 1926, through until it ceased production towards the end of 1937, the Riley Nine Monaco was to prove a great success and became highly regarded for its high standard of handling and performance. Priced at £298, it was very much the ‘M3’ of choice for the family man who wanted a saloon of this size with sporting inclinations.
At Milestones we do like nice pre-war cars and when we were offered this remarkable Riley by a retired engineer we could not resist!
First registered on 1 July 1932 this Monaco has been in enthusiastic hands for many years. The car was taken off the road in the mid-1960’s and by the early 1970’s needed a full restoration.
Stage 1 – 1970 to 1984
· Car rescued from storage and fully dismantled.
· All ball and roller bearings replaced
· Engine rebored, crank reground & bearings re-metalled (Johnson Roberts)
· Engine balanced at the same time
· Timber frame replaced and by early 1980’s required paint and reassembly
The owner (a Ford Engineer) was relocated several times and the car followed him each time until, due to a change of circumstances, he had to sell the Riley.
Stage 2 – 1984 to 1989
Car in storage/ little work completed. House move forces sale
Stage 3 – 1989 to 2007
· Extensive handwritten log detailing all work completed
· Engine rebuild, clutch, brakes, suspension etc
· All electrical components
· Interior refurbished
· Bodywork painted in Maroon & Black (original scheme – see RF60)
Stage 4 – 2007 to 2022
Used regularly and maintained to an extremely high standard by a retired engineer as part of a private collection of pre-war cars.
The large history folder includes buff (RF60) logbook, old MOTs, lots of invoices, letters, and an extensive handwritten log – it is lovely.
This Monaco is a credit to the previous owners – she drives as good as she looks and the Riley Motor Club is one of the best with active membership, lots of events & excellent spares support.
We recommend viewing in order to fully appreciate this prestige classic.
