Here’s a wonderful example of one of the all-time great hot hatches. It’s a 1988 Peugeot 205 1. 9 GTI, finished in black with the original 15-inch alloy wheels and sliding glass sunroof.
The interior features the original dark-grey part-leather seats, with red trim and red carpets. It still has the original Philip radio-cassette player (and there is even a selection of tapes to go with it!). It’s all in amazing good condition, inside and out.
The GTI has covered just 53, 750 miles from new and benefits from having money spent on it in recent years. Work of note includes a new clutch, differential seals, master cylinder, starter motor, top mounts, mass airflow sensor, cam cover gasket and much more, at a cost of over £2200 in 2022. The wheels are clad with Michelin Pilot tyres.
The 1. 9 was the range-topping 205, with its 1. 9-litre engine developing 130bhp which, in such a light car, gives a 0-62mph sprint in 7. 8 seconds and a top speed of 127mph. Combined with surefooted handling, the GTI 1. 9 remains a huge amount of fun to drive.
Good 205 GTIs are now hard to come by, so this original low-mileage example is a real treat.
