Description
Distinction, Luxury, Richness... Motoring in a grand manner!
Oh yes... you can see it in the bold sweep of its coachwork, in the classic shape of its vinyl-covered roof line, in the quiet confidence of its broad stance.
You can also feel it in the way it rides and handles - smoother and more responsive than any comparable car. and you'll sense it in the silence that greets you when you're under way.
It’s early 1973 and Holden’s flagship Statesman de Ville warbles out of the gates of Buckingham Palace in the middle of winter. With pillowy clouds of condensation billowing into the cold air from the exhaust of the Statey’s V8 drivetrain, a gloved hand rises to the window and bids the crowd ‘Gidday’.
Sounds completely farcical?... well it never materialised but the possibility of Queen Elizabeth II enjoying the luxury of Australia’s most sumptuous vehicle of the 1970s was closer to reality than you think.
Instead, Holden’s international ambitions for the Statesman were later realised with successful exports to South Africa (under the Chevrolet Constantia badge) and Japan as an Isuzu. In Australia and new Zealand, the Statesman enjoyed a 13-year reign as Holden’s flagship, with 50, 000 HQ, HJ, HX, HZ and final WB models produced.
