1926 Austin 7 Gordon England ‘Brooklands’ Super Sports

In 1923, Sir Herbert Austin's son-in-law, Arthur Waite, began achieving considerable sporting successes in an Austin 7 at Brooklands.

Another driver, E. C. Gordon England, persuaded Sir Herbert to provide him with a racing Austin 7 in which he established six new class records again at Brooklands.  Under his guidance a special lightweight 'staggered seat' 2-seater body was created, weighing just 20 lb (9. 1 kg), This Special car was entered in the 1100 cc class for the Brooklands Junior Car Club 200-mile race in 1923.   EC Gordon England finished in second place, winning a further five class records.

The streamlined 1926 Austin 7 Gordon England ‘Brooklands’ Super Sports presented here, has one of a small number of replica bodies built by the well-respected expert, Tom Abanethy in the late 1970s.

The original Specials were campaigned and used in hill climbs and other competition from the late 1920s onwards.

The current sports engine features a high-lift camshaft, Tulip valves and a Solex 30mm carburettor, with a pressurised lubrication system. Thanks to its distinctive streamlined body and lightness, this Austin 7 is understood to be capable of reaching a top speed of around 75mph.

This particular car has the 2nd of Tom Abanethy’s first small batch of replica bodies.  She has been fitted with the correct Brooklands engine, with a new 1 ½ inch pressure fed crank and rods and a Paul Bonewell camshaft (the original crank and camshaft are supplied).

The close ratio gear box has been rebuilt and the 4. 9:1 ratio rear axle has also been rebuilt.

This Austin 7 has won her class 3 times at The Beaulieu National Austin 7 Rally and has proved very reliable and capable of cruising comfortably at 55 mph.

This well-known car has been put together with great attention to detail and must be seen to be appreciated.

More photographs and a video will be added shortly.
