Description
Country Classic Cars are pleased to offer this 1960 VW Beetle which certainly presents more Orange County, California than it does Midhurst, Sussex; a commission sale on behalf of an existing customer. The Cal-Look goes front to back with extensive upgrades and specialist mods culminate in a striking form that is now looking for a new custodian to take it to the next level.
This resto-mod was completed prior to the current (and 6th) owner taking the reigns in 2021 and with any ground up challenge there is always too many details to list but the highlights are as follows:
Registered with its 1192cc motor a new 1600 unit has been fitted with uprated inlet manifold, carbs and ignition plus battery and belt with a ‘rat pack’ exhaust system. Fibreglass rear wings and complete ‘flip’ front that surrounds rolled alloy tank, uprated and stiffened suspension, new brake discs and Porsche Cookie Cutter rims. The cabin features a half cage with rear bench removed, Porsche seating with Schorth harness security, new carpets and trim, new Porsche VDO gauges offering Amps/ Fuel/ Speedo with milometer @ 883 miles/ revs/ temp/ oil pressure and clock. Electric windows, SWM steering wheel and fire extinguisher with audio courtesy of a Sony DSX-A410BT unit (bluetooth) with Clarion speakers to doors and rear panels.
At Country Classic Cars we find it’s best to present a ‘warts and all’ detailed write up of any vehicle we are requested to sell and whilst we are not experts in the VW mod scene our classic knowledge will recognise improvements new owners may consider necessary. This approach helps to avoid ‘buyer’s remorse’ especially for those purchasing from abroad or interested parties travelling distances to view. We surmise after this in-depth build was completed the car has been stored, covering limited miles and will now benefit from a complete refresh to return the visuals to show level or the alternate option is to drive and enjoy as is. Both interior and engine bay require minimal attention some re-chroming with many hours of polishing for those chasing concours appearance. The shell is a solid example, a definite lack of corrosion and well protected with wax injection and sealed throughout. Genuine Porsche ‘Cookie Cutter’ rims will certainly stand out even more after a light refurb and although our images fail to detail we have noted most panels suffering from micro blistering to the black paint finish and there is a scratch to the n/ s rear wing. We feel our pricing allows for the option of a full respray which benefits those looking to present a show example.
Starting is enhanced with a push button operation and the new engine leaps readily into life, the clutch is firm but not heavy and gear selection is best described as ‘short shift with minimal throw’. Performance is enthusiastic and certainly a world away from the early Beetles with positive steering feedback and firm (track ready) suspension setup. The brakes are good and the overall impression behind the wheel is of a ‘well sorted’ car with the fun factor still at the forefront of the driving experience. A unique classic with great spares backup ensures the ‘Bug’ following never diminishes but with this example track days and sprint competition can also be pursued. Or just enjoy club drive-outs and showing off one of the coolest Beetles available.
