Description
The Bentley S2 debuted in September 1959 and followed on from its predecessor the S1. The S2 featured the all-new aluminium Rolls-Royce – Bentley L Series V8, shared with the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II. It displaced 6. 2 L and produced around 200 bhp. The S2 introduced an automatic transmission, power steering, and servo brakes as standard, with these features combining to make an excellent grand touring car. Production of the S2 Continental ran until 1962, with 388 examples being built during this time.
The S2 Continental chassis differed by virtue of its shorter radiator, four-leading-shoe front drum brakes and higher gearing. The Continental began life exclusively as a two-door car, but from 1967 H J Mulliner offered the most elegant four-door six-light coachwork on the Continental chassis, this model being known as the ‘Flying Spur’.
The RHD Flying Spur example we are thrilled to offer is one of the last of its type built by H J Mulliner and was delivered new in the U. K. by HR Owen Ltd to one Samuel Docherty of Glasgow in April, 1962. The car was specified from new in H. J. M Regal Red over a Beige leather upholstery, the same colours it wears today.
This example presents superbly, showing 46, 650 miles on the odometer and benefitting from a high-quality re-spray and interior retrim around 10 years ago. The car maintains a significant history file with sundry invoices and MOT certificates dating back to the 1960s as well as a copy of the original sales invoice detailing the factory specification and delivery date.
