The Gonzoline Special – Custom-Built Hot-Rod Beetle.
Step into a masterpiece of engineering and creativity with the Gonzoline Special, a custom-built hot-rod Beetle that redefines what it means to be a show-stopper. The creation of renowned builder Adrian Bird, who has been crafting cars for over 40 years, this stunning Beetle is the result of a lifelong passion for both air-cooled VWs and high-performance hot rods.
Inspired by the iconic Dr. Gonzo Volksrod project from Volksworld Magazine, Adrian set out to build a car that combines the cutting-edge spirit of aircraft engineering with the raw performance and aesthetic of 1950s and 1960s Indianapolis race cars. With a vision as bold as this, Adrian enlisted the help of hot-rod artist Chris Froggett, who created a unique caricature-style drawing that served as the blueprint for the build—a roadmap of ideas that guided the creation of this one-of-a-kind Beetle.
Exterior and Bodywork-
The Gonzoline Special began its transformation with a complete teardown, where the body and pan were separated, bare-metalled, and restored with absolute precision. The Beetle’s original 1966 body was given a subtle 2-inch roof chop, and classic features like the wings, and running boards were carefully deleted. The body and door bottoms were extended, smoothed, and meticulously detailed, creating a sleek, flowing design.
The entire car was first dry-built, then disassembled for a custom paint job by Simon Emery at The Paintbox. It’s finished in Moonrise Pearl, with faux white gold leaf trim and custom racing numbers by the incredible Neil Milliard of Prosign. Pinstripes and details make this Beetle a work of art from every angle. Completing the look are OTB replica headlights with integral LED indicators, and gorgeous rear lights from a 1937 Ford with custom indicators and fabricated fairings.
Custom Engineering and Performance-
Beneath the surface, the Gonzoline Special is loaded with high-performance, aircraft-inspired components. The chassis has been smoothed and strengthened with a custom front beam extender. The 4-inch dropped front suspension uses a replica Ford Model A I-beam, and the brake and fuel lines are crafted from braided stainless steel hoses, all fitted with black anodized or polished fittings for that extra touch of precision.
The car rolls on American Salt Flat Specials, finished in polished and painted champagne bronze, and paired with Excelsior cross-ply tyres, giving it a mean stance. Under the rear deck lid, you'll find a 1776cc engine with dual 46 IDA carbs, custom-built by Matt Keene at Airkraft. Paired with a Stainless A1 header exhaust system, this engine not only sounds incredible but also delivers power with precision. And for that extra bit of flair, the rear features a Gatling gun-style exhaust where the end even rotates as the engine runs.
Interior Design-
Inside, the Gonzoline Special is just as jaw-dropping as the exterior. The bucket seats and aluminum diamond-patterned door panels were custom-made by Big Wig Race Cars in Texas. Every detail, from the handbrake to the pedal assembly, has been stripped, painted, and reassembled with custom brackets and polished fasteners. The roll cage and steering column are crafted from alloy and stainless steel, hand-polished and drilled for rifle-like precision.
Up on the dash, the Autometer gauges are housed in billet brackets, with the warning light cluster borrowed from a Triumph Speed Triple motorcycle—a nod to Adrian’s love for classic racing details.
Attention to Detail-
Every part of the Gonzoline Special has been thoughtfully designed and executed. From the twin fuel tanks, which appear to float on a billet alloy stand, to the machined holes across the bonnet, heater channels, and engine lid, this build is all about the details. Even the brake fluid reservoirs have been custom-built from billet aluminum, doubling as the bonnet catch. Nothing on this car has been left untouched or unpolished.
A Legacy of Craftsmanship-
The Gonzoline Special is not just a vehicle; it’s a testament to Adrian Bird’s dedication to the craft. With over 40 years of experience building everything from air-cooled VWs to vintage race cars, Adrian’s eye for detail and passion for perfection are evident in every aspect of this build. This isn’t just a show car—it’s a high-performance machine that delivers on both looks and engineering.
Whether you’re looking for a head-turner for the next car show or a one-of-a-kind hot-rod Beetle with an incredible backstory, the Gonzoline Special is in a league of its own.
