Granat Red Metallic History Research into a small BMW with a tailgate began in April 1963 with an initial sketch by in-house stylist Georg Bertram. The arrival on the market of the first functional hatchbacks, such as the Autobianchi Primula , the Renault 16 and the Glass CL , convinced BMW of the need to launch such a model. BMW consulted Italian designers FRUA and MICHELOTTI. MICHELOTTI was chosen for his study and the Touring arrived in the catalogue in the spring of 1971.
The bodywork of the Touring differed from that of the saloon in the following ways: the body was 12 cm shorter but had more interior space, the windscreen was more inclined (37° instead of 42°), the car was 23 cm lower, there was a 3rd rear door, the bench seat could be folded in two, the exhaust outlet was on the left instead of the right, the BMW logo was placed on the tailgate instead of on the rear panel, and there was no strip connecting the rear lights.
The underside of the car is identical to that of the saloon, with the exception of the fuel tank, whose capacity has been increased from 46 to 52 litres in order to offer a range of over 500 km. The Touring's equipment is more extensive, with boot lighting, carpeting in the boot and a heated rear window. The Touring immediately adopted the 02 series name to ensure consistency across the range with the saloon and cabriolet. The car was not as successful as it should have been, selling just under 30, 000 units before being withdrawn from the catalogue in 1974 and not benefiting from the rework carried out in the summer of 1973. Certainly too innovative, the Touring was far ahead of its time and boasted a very high quality finish. Today, it is a very rare BMW product on the market and this version is magnificent. Description The model we are presenting was delivered new to Bologna in Italy in September 1973 and has known only 4 owners. The 2002 Touring has only 57, 000 original km and is in very good condition. Equipped with a 4-speed manual gearbox and a 2-litre 4-cylinder engine, the car is easy and modern to use. Its 103bhp is more than enough power for this car, which boasts great road holding. Fitted with new tyres and magnificent Momo alloy wheels, the car has received the new restyling, which includes: - A new radiator grille with position lights integrated into the headlights - Black windscreen wipers - Modified front seats, derived from those on the 5 Series E12 saloon and fitted as standard with newly designed headrests.
- Reinforced brake assist - Front seat belts as standard... The Touring is magnificent in its Granat Red metallic livery, which is around ten years old and bears witness to a very healthy body, with no trace of corrosion to be found on the car. The interior, which is entirely original, is in excellent condition, with its very good quality mixed (imitation/ fabric) seats, the carpets are perfect, as are the door panels; the roof lining is perfect, with absolutely no stains. The dashboard is in very good condition, with no cracks, the instruments are all operational, everything works, and there are no missing buttons. The steering wheel is superb and true to the original; you get a huge amount of glass and a secure driving position thanks to the large steering wheel and the ease of use of the gear lever. The brakes are powerful and responsive, and you're in a German car that feels safe and durable. The folding rear seat is clever, with small additional shelves that provide a useful, flat boot floor. The car has a four-headlight grille, which was an option at the time, and is very practical for night-time use. The trim and chrome are in perfect condition, and the bumpers are neither bent nor damaged. The underside is in excellent condition, with no corrosion, the floorboards are sound, and the side members are perfect. This car is a great opportunity to buy your first classic car at the lowest possible price, with ease of use for long journeys without any apprehension. A delight to drive. A delight to drive. Our Opinion This is undoubtedly a rare opportunity to buy a German classic car that is so well maintained and has such low mileage. The car has French collector's registration.
