Description
Newly imported from a dedicated Renault collector in South Africa we offer this fantastic stylish Renault Caravelle designed by Ghia. This example is the practical 2+2 cabriolet version which comes with both a soft top and hard top. Although incredibly pretty with the roof down, arguably it looks even better with the hard top fitted.
Glamour doesn't come any better than in the form of Brigitte Bardot and it was none other than the French style icon herself who helped Renault with their marketing back in early 60's. In fact she was so taken with her car that she has still has it to this day.
It is rear engined and was one of the earliest cars to feature disc brakes all round. However, this example is no ordinary standard Caravelle but a car mechanically much improved over the original. A mild restomod 'in keeping' and giving all the benefits of a much more modern drive.
The conversion consists of a 1397cc engine from the Renault 9. It has all the same mounting places on the block as the earlier original 1100cc engine making it an easy swap. This particular build also has a special gearbox conversion using a 5 speed Renault 5 unit which gives much better gearing and relaxed top speed cruising. This combination works beautifully together and makes the car an absolute delight to drive.
Moving on to the bodywork, this car has seen the benefit of always living in dry inland South African states and hence the original bodywork and panels have never been welded and are rust free. The interior has been re-trimmed at some point and again is in fantastic shape throughout. The hood is 'as new' and in perfect condition
The PLS alloys are high quality expensive wheels imported from France and fitted with new Michelin tyres, the sign of a caring owner who only wants the best.
It was maintained by a dedicated mechanic who looked after all thirty Renault cars in the previous owner's collection, hence it has been kept in tip top mechanical order since his purchase some 10 years ago.
Now UK registered as NSC 401F.
