Some additional safety features include twin brake/ tail lamps, flashing indicators and an electric wiper motor. Manufactured in 1936 and originally registered and delivered in June of that year by Whitby’s Garage, Leicester. Comes with a ‘buff logbook’, V5C and various original manuals.

Description:

The Model Y was the first Ford motor car designed for markets outside of the United States, and was the first car produced at the newly opened Dagenham plant from 1932 to late 1937. It became hugely popular as an inexpensive form of modern transport, and later improvements to economies of scale allowed Ford to offer it from only £100 in 1935, easily out-competing other companies such as Morris, Austin and the like. The models were offered as two-door (Tudor) and four-door (Fordor) saloons, with an optional sliding sunroof, and also in light commercial van form.

This particular Y, is a later production ‘long rad’ ‘Tudor’ model registered on 20th June 1936 by Whitby’s Garage in Leicester under registration number ARY 377. Unfortunately, in recent years one of the previous owners sold the original registration, hence it is now under its current non-transferrable issue. She has had only 5 registered keepers in her 88 year lifespan. We came about it locally through a chap who was using it as his daily driver but had got the point where he needed a change! We have gone through a few things to get the car useable again, including sorting out the wiring so all lights and horn operate as they should, and giving the bodywork a coat of paint conditioning oil to help preserve the patina. However, we are selling her as a running, driving project vehicle in ‘oily-rag’ condition – An ideal entry into pre-war motoring by using it as it is with some further tweaking, or to give her some restoration work over winter!

The little sidevalve engine fires up from cold easily enough with a bit of choke, and will settle into a steady idle once warmed up with a burble from her short exhaust system (thanks to Ford’s cost cutting!). Setting out onto the road, the gearbox selects all three gears plus reverse in a slick fashion, and will pull as willingly as these little engines would, allowing her to trundle along at circa 40mph (on the flat!). The rod-actuated brakes pull it up straight, and the steering is okay but has a bit of wear in the ‘box allowing it to wander a little on the road at higher speeds.

Her bodywork has a particular charm and patina to it, having that ‘wiped over with a rag’ old-car look that it would probably have had in the 1940s and 50s. There are a few knocks and dinks in the wings, the nearside rear has a small bit of corrosion showing but is currently okay. There are signs of it having WW2 blackout markings on the wings and running boards for WW2 reenactment events, however these have been painted over again. The bottom of the steelwork on lower quarters behind the doors have also corroded away, but is not showing signs of any further deterioration and the timber frame behind is all intact. It has also had the later addition of flashing indicators mounted on the bumpers, along with LED headlamp bulbs for greater safety.

Underneath, the car is nice and solid with no corrosion issues to note. The exhaust system is also very good, and all five Avon Tourist tyres have plenty of tread and show no signs of perishing. All in all, this is a fantastic, well-preserved little motor car that is absolutely ready to be maintained, enjoyed and improved and would make a great entry point into vintage motoring with great club and parts support from the Ford Model Y & C Register plus the Ford Sidevalve Owners Club. We’ve had great fun driving it around the Shropshire lanes, so if you’re interested, please get in touch, we’d be happy to help.
