Introduced in 1952, the Y type was MG’s first post-war saloon. It has advanced features such as coil-spring independent front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering, and also incorporates a number of additional improvements such as a stronger clutch, 15”-diameter wheels and a hypoid bevel rear axle. The YB production ceased at the end of 1953 with just 1, 301 examples having been made.
This particular vehicle forms an important part of MG’s competition history in the post-war era, as it was driven by Dick Jacobs to three consecutive wins in the BRDC’s Daily Express-sponsored Production Touring Car race at Silverstone between 1952 and 1954, an achievement all the more remarkable for the fact that the car was driven to and from the circuit on each occasion. As a proprietor of an MG dealership – Mill Garage in London E18 - Jacobs obtained UHK 111 with the help of Tom Sangster, Nuffield Group Sales Manager, and John Thornley, MG’s General Manager at the time. Thornley would later credit Jacob’s performances in the YB as being responsible for persuading MG to re-enter motorsport.
Jacobs’ winner’s plaques are still in place on the dashboard and the car comes with original race programmes, 1954 paddock pass and period photograph of it in action at Silverstone.
The vehicle underwent a two-year restoration in the late 1970s and there are numerous related invoices on file together with expired MOTs.
The vehicle has formed part of a private collection for the past 16 years, having spent the last four years on display in The Silverstone Museum. It has been meticulously serviced and maintained by ourselves since 2008 with many invoices to show.
