A very rewarding project
Here we have an interesting car to offer to market - a Mercedes-Benz 500 SL from 1985 finished in red with a very fetching red leather interior and still with its factory hard top. Some may say this is the ultimate ‘Bobby Ewing’ specification, if you are of a certain age and a fan of ‘Dallas’. Moving on, this example comes to us as a project and we think a very rewarding one at that, not just because of what it is but more because it may not be a very difficult car to bring back to its former glory. It is a barn find, but it appears to have been stored very well - as ever we do encourage you to come and view the Mercedes first hand to make up your own mind. The best thing is that it comes with the private plate ‘1936 ND’ which on its own has had an independent valuation of over £3, 500. Maybe if you sold the plate, it may go a long way towards the restoration of the car - just a thought. We think this SL, looking as good as it does in red with that plate, is a lovely combination in itself but that is up to the buyer.
The HPi would suggest that the plate has been on the car since 1995, and the V5 suggests that it was also registered overseas. It is declared as a 1985 year of manufacture and was registered in the UK on 28/ 8/ 1985. Maybe it was on the Channel Islands or from Southern Ireland, but we cannot confirm this. It is a RHD example and may have spent a little while somewhere else, but this all happened in the same year of 1985. The specification is rather nice with its original factory hard top, rear period black boot spoiler and upgraded alloy wheels. Coupled with the red paintwork and red leather interior, make it stand out and probably rather unique compared to other Mercedes SLs of the time. We think this is a good thing!
The history is rather nice and is believed to be right up to when it was put in storage. There are lots of invoices from Victoria Garage in Lancashire detailing works carried out, along with a selection of older MOTs, its original owner’s handbooks and the aforementioned independent valuation for the registration. All in all, this will make for an impressive car when finished.
