Description
The Triumph TR4 is a classic sports car that was manufactured by the Triumph Motor Company between 1961 and 1965. Serving as the successor to the TR3A, the TR4 shares a similar chassis and drivetrain with its predecessor but features a modernized body design crafted by Michelotti. Notably, the TR4 was the first production car to offer an optional hardtop that included a fixed glass rear with an integrated rollbar, along with a detachable center panel. This innovative roof system predates the Porsche 911/ 912 Targa by five years. For versatility, the hardtop can be swapped out for a vinyl insert with a supporting frame, allowing for easy stowage of the latter, while the rigid panel is not designed to fit inside the vehicle, the vinyl insert and frame could be. The factory offered the rigid top and backlight assembly as the "Hard Top kit", and the vinyl insert and frame separately as the "Surrey top".
This specific example, built in March 1962 and in 'Fast Road' rally specification, boasts matching numbers and was meticulously restored for historic motorsport use in 2019/ 20 by Triumph specialist Classic Bodies Forell in Paderborn, Germany.

Equipped with a factory original A-overdrive gearbox, this TR4 features a rebuilt engine enlarged to 2300 cc, incorporating forged connecting rods and a lightened flywheel. The engine now delivers an impressive 74 kW (131 ps) and is further enhanced with sports stainless steel exhaust and manifold, higher compression, a 280-degree cam, and various other performance upgrades. The car benefits from a reinforced frame and comes fitted with Avon (18570 R 15V) tyres optimized for fast road and rally track days.
Inside, you'll find quality leather seats adorned with Porsche check fabric, storage nets positioned behind the seats, and aluminum footwell supports. Additional features include a fire extinguisher, reading lamp, 12-volt charging socket, sports steering wheel, and an emergency cut-off switch. For enhanced functionality, the bodywork includes ventilation for the engine compartment, aluminum splash guards in the wheel arches, and an aluminum fuel tank.
The exterior is impeccably finished in a micro-based Cornish Grey, protected by two coats of clear lacquer. The braking system features a two-circuit set-up with a brake booster, aluminum rear brake drums, and sports pads.
Following completion, this TR4 was thoroughly tested in the Alps and at the Bilster Berg race track in Bad Driburg, Germany, covering over 3000 kilometers. This vehicle is a premium choice for enthusiasts who appreciate driving, representing an outstanding TR4 that has been restored and built to the highest standards by one of the best in the industry. Currently, it holds a German registration with historical status.
