Description
This is a very fine example of the elegant Aston Martin DB2/ 4 Mark III, more commonly known as the DB Mk III, of which only 551 were produced between March 1957 and July 1959, 85 of them convertibles. The DB Mk III was distinguished from other DB2s by its racing-inspired grille, which was to become Aston Martin's leitmotif as it was systematically repeated on all other models.
Its low production volume was justified by the fact that the DB MkIII was entirely hand-built, with an engine signed by its designer and, above all, distributed on an almost confidential basis.
The 3-litre Lagonda engine was extensively modified by Tadek Marek, who joined Aston Martin in 1954 and went on to design the DB4. The DBA had a new crankcase, new intake and exhaust manifolds, new overhead camshafts, a new engine block and an oil pump. With a displacement of 2, 922 cc and two SU H4 carburettors, the DBA engine delivered 162 bhp at 5, 500 rpm. It even gained an extra 16 bhp on models fitted with twin tailpipes like the one shown here.
Our Aston Martin DB2/ 4 Mk III is finished in an elegant Pacific blue, which perfectly complements the blue-grey leather interior. Supplied with a right-hand drive manual gearbox by Aston Martin London in 1958, it is fitted with an original overdrive, an option only available on "III B" models.
Pampered by 2 or 3 successive British owners, it was fully restored in 2010. Coys will then sell it to its current owner, a Belgian enthusiast who has kept it in his collection for 14 years.
