Here we have for sale a 1978 Land Rover® Series 3, finished in popular Light Pastel Green with Limestone Wheels & Hard Top. We always like to do what we can to carry an original “hard sides” Series 3 in stock – for those of you looking for as much all-weather utility as possible, and often using them as a promotional vehicle for vintage businesses by sign-writing the sides of the roof.
Externally, we think this Series 3 is the right balance between period features and modern functionality – a tow bar with electrics allows towing modern trailers (they can tow up to 3500kg braked) and larger defender style door mirrors give improved visibility when driving and making manoeuvres. Other than those items of note, this is a very stock Series 3 with vintage number plates, rear grab handles, rear mud flaps, 750 chevron tyres with a matching rear door mounted spare, etc etc. A recent bumper gives that final finishing touch which contrasts well with the colour coded lamp surrounds and the black and white plates.
On the inside, there are two outer front standard seats, both with belts, along with deluxe matting to the footwells. The central middle has been fitted with a cubby box which has a pair of cup holders – handy for both storing items out of view and when you have a coffee from the local drive through. The rear is currently unfitted with the exception of a load mat to the floor area, but could house bench seats on request for £595 to bring seating for six people including the driver if so desired. The unfitted format back here is, in our opinion, a positive as it allows the new keeper to kit it out as they see fit – whether it be for passengers, tools, gardening equipment, or other material.
Out on the road, the period petrol pulls well – servo brakes mean a better than expected stopping performance too. The 750 tyres not only give more gearing and allow the extra power of the Weber Carburettor to be exploited, but they also give a good on and off-road ability whilst being self cleaning if they do get caught in the mud which seems to be ever present at this time of year. It delivers a pleasing period drive, with the enhancements mentioned to make things a little easier for the driver and a raspy exhaust thanks to that new system too.
In summary then, if you are looking for a Series 3 Land Rover® for the upcoming colder months, then this could be for you. With the hard top, heater with front de mist, the ability to lock the whole vehicle, the unfitted rear which gives maximum flexibility to the new keeper and the financial benefits of MOT & Tax Exemption alongside classic insurance – this is just about as versatile as a Series 3 Land Rover® can be for the most possible scenarios.
