The Mk2 Volkswagen Golf GTI is an increasingly collectable car and this 1991 example, offered at No Reserve, is a desirable example. Finished in black with the appealing rainbow interior, it is a GTI 8v with expert upgrades to the 1800cc engine. The head has been gas-flowed, ported and polished, there’s a Piper 276 fast-road high-lift camshaft, bronze valve guides, re-ground valves with unleaded petrol valve seat conversion, and a Piper vernier pulley on the camshaft. Further enhancing performance is a 2. 25-inch stainless-steel exhaust. The timing belt was replaced at 155, 000 miles. The vendor describes both engine and transmission as being in ‘excellent’ condition.
‘J49FDM’ has enhanced suspension too. It has adjustable AP Racing coilovers, plus Eibach anti-roll bars front and rear. Enhancing both handling and looks are nearly-new ATS Cup wheels. Inside, the GTI features electric windows, and a premium Pioneer touchscreen stereo that brings a modern touch to the classic cabin. The vendor has had a new roof lining fitted, and adds that all the glass is original. ‘J49FDM’ also has an MOT that’s valid until June 2025. A comprehensive history file comes with the car, including plenty of receipts and even the original service record. An HPI report shows the car was previously written off as a Category C back in 2010.
The Volkswagen Golf GTI is the original GTI. The Mk1 caused a stir in the 1970s but it was the Mk2, introduced in 1983, that really put the model on the map. An icon of the 1980s, people loved its classy appearance, effortless performance and fabulous reliability. This saw an entire enthusiast community grow around the car, which thrives to this day. A great starter classic whose famed build quality still makes a difference, the Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk2 remains as desirable as ever.
