Description
A very fine example of the underrated Reliant Scimitar GT, this 1966 SE4 is number 109 of the 297 made with the straight six Ford Zephyr engine before the design was re-engineered to accept the Essex V6. A rare car indeed.
This example has benefited from over £20, 000 having been spent on it over the last two years. Work carried out includes a respray, overdrive rebuild, rebuilt wheels, new clutch plus work on the gearbox, suspension, fuel system, electrics and much more to bring the car up to its present high standard.
Originally supplied by Roger Clark Cars of Leicester, the Scimitar apparently has been used for hillclimbs in the past. There are additional oil and water heaters and the period leads come with the car.
The car looks superb in Ermine White with dark red competition wire wheels. The interior is original and is in excellent order. The Webasto roof is original to the car and has been recovered.
In the Scimitar the Zephyr engine is fitted with triple SU carburettors and gives an output of 120bhp at 5, 000rpm. With a kerb weight of 21. 5cwt performance was impressive by the standards of the day and the 20 gallon fuel tank gives an impressive touring range.
The car comes with a comprehensive file which includes invoices, workshop manual, a rare owner’s handbook, sales literature and period press reviews.
The Scimitar impressed during our test drive. The engine is very willing and revs freely – it is a quick car. Steering, handling, braking and ride were all up to expectation. The gearchange worked well and the overdrive engages without delay. With its stainless steel exhaust system the Scimitar emits a wonderful sound – there is nothing to compare with a well tuned straight six.
The Ogle designed GT body is both pretty and distinctive. With its well developed chassis and power train the Scimitar makes a very attractive alternative to other more expensive cars of similar performance.
