We’ve known this subtly upgraded E-Type for over seventeen years and over this time have supplied the car three times. This fantastic older restoration is an exceptional driver and presents exceptionally well throughout. This UK Home Market car was manufactured on the 2nd February 1962 and Jaguar Distributors Leeds then supplied the E-Type to Ross Brothers Limited of Ilkley and registered with the Leeds registration mark 228 AWR. The E-Type was supplied new to a Limited Company in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire and we have a Heritage Certificate confirming all early details.
228 AWR was fully rebuilt from 24th May 1990 to the 26th April 1991 and a photo record and log has been kept with the car detailing over 1200 hours of labour. The E-Type was taken to a bare shell and new body panels were bought new from Martin Robey and the log indicates how thorough and meticulous the restorer was. The impressive total body restoration was matched by a full mechanical overhaul to include engine and gearbox rebuild a full list of all new body parts, engine and gearbox parts are with the history. Various upgrades to improve comfort, drivability and performance were carried out to include Coopercraft brakes, full stainless steel exhaust system and manifolds and the much more usable, later all syncromesh Jaguar gearbox.
288 AWR is presented incredibly well throughout and offers excellent value for what is a good, strong, honest and usable example. The bodywork and paint are still very sharp many years on since restoration, the chrome work is bright, the underneath is still in body colour and presenting superbly. The interior is beautifully presented, in early 2022 huge expenditure went into brand new re-trimmed seats and various trim improvements were made to take the interior to a high standard. Also in early 2022 the E-Type had a major service and some mechanical re-commissioning after several years of very little use. Over £7000 was spent on brand new front and rear brake kits, new rear discs, handbrake pads, brake master cylinder, new clutch and slave cylinders, clutch hose, upper ball joint kit, steering rack mountings and new halfshaft UJ's. Over the past few thousand miles the E-Type has also had a rear axle overhaul and new dampers and springs. Further improvements also include luminition coil plugs and leads and new engine mountings. Since we last saw the car in 2022 it has had a brand new set of chrome wire wheels, extensive under bonnet detailing and various subtle improvements to ensure the car presents to a high standard.
The E-Type now records 77500 miles with the last owner covering 2500 miles in the past eleven years. Since total restoration, this Series One FHC has covered 11500 miles and whilst we cannot guarantee the overall mileage is genuine, MOT certificates do date back to 1977 when the mileage was 60, 342. On the road, 228 AWR is top class. The engine is outstanding with very good oil pressure, the all syncro gearbox is a delight to use and the ride and handling first class. Braking is very sharp benefitting from the upgrades and the car is very enjoyable on the road. 228 AWR is a subtly upgraded car with exceptional performance and it will not disappoint.
