Fifty-plus years on, it is hard to imagine the impact the Honda CB750 had on the motorcycling world when it was unveiled to a stunned public at the 1968 Tokyo Show. Here for the first time was a mass-produced four within the financial reach of the average enthusiast, and one whose specification made the opposition look obsolete overnight.
In 1976, Honda introduced the automatic transmission CB750A, with sales restricted to the Japanese and North American markets. The Hondamatic transmission was a two-speed affair with torque converter - although the gears were still selected via a foot pedal - and perhaps more accurately could be termed 'clutch-less' rather than automatic. The engine was detuned for the 750A. Sales were disappointing and production ceased in 1978.
The vendor acquired this rare Honda CB750A from David Silver Spares in 2018 (purchase receipt on file). Used sparingly, the machine was last run in July 2024 and otherwise has been kept dry stored in the workshop. A selection of spares comes with it to include the original shock absorbers and ignition system (electronic ignition has been fitted). The vendor's advancing age and ill health forces the sale. Accompanying documentation includes a current V5C; some MoTs (most recent expired 5th September 2023); various David Silver and other invoices; and import/ title copy paperwork.
