Lot 222

1927 AJS 498cc H8
Registration no. BF 9400
Frame no. H91026 (see text)
Engine no. Unknown (see text)
After many years of manufacturing their very successful 350s and larger V twins, for the 1926 season AJS introduced their first production ohv 500 model which was followed by a side valve 500 twelve months later. As usual, the factory continued to participate in competition events being particularly successful in reliability trials. Early 1927 saw the debut of the 349cc and 498cc overhead cam race machines, but they were not immediately victorious. The vendor tells us that he bought this overhead valve 500cc flat tanker at auction some years ago. During his ownership it has benefitted from new stainless steel wheel rims and spokes, a recorked clutch, and recut teeth on the kickstart quadrant. Please note the nice competition style oil tank on the saddle tube. He says that he has used it regularly and that it is great fun to ride. It should be noted that the frame number displays some evidence of overstamping, and that the engine number is unknown because the number plaque is missing. The gearbox number is H91026. Offered for sale only because the vendor now has insufficient time to ride all his machines and is thinning out his collection, it is accompanied by a V5C, AJS & Matchless O. C. dating certificate, and various spares. Some further restoration and recommissioning may be required. Prospective bidders should satisfy themselves as to the motorcycle's completeness and mechanical condition prior to bidding. Sold strictly as viewed.

All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams Motorcycles website for all pertinent auction information.
