We are told that this eye-catching flat tank AJS, now in road trim, was used by Jack Brantom in the 1930s in dirt track and speedway events, and later in VMCC grass track events by his son Dave Brantom. Some of the competition components are included in the sale, including a gearbox which has been converted to single speed operation, which is therefore without a layshaft. A crack in this gearbox case was repaired by a previous owner. The vendor tells us that the gearbox currently fitted is a 350 item which may not be up to coping with the full power generated by the larger engine, and that if all the available performance is to be used on the road it may be prudent to fit a more robust 500 gearbox or convert the spare single speed box back to its full set of ratios. The type 27 carburettor has been professionally converted to needle operation. Some further restoration and recommissioning may be required including fine tuning the carburettor settings and ignition timing to achieve optimum running. A spare engine is included in the form of crankcase no. M9/ 131979 with an ohv top end. The vendor believes this spare engine to be unused and race prepared by a previous owner. Accompanied by a V5C and AJS & Matchless O. C. dating certificate. Prospective bidders should satisfy themselves as to the motorcycle's completeness and mechanical condition prior to bidding.
