Description
The second generation of the legendary Mercedes ‘S-Class’ - The W126 took the successful formula of the W116, and worked to further build on it by improving the ride, handling and efficiency. Launched in 1979 at the IAA Frankfurt show, the new W126 was more aerodynamic (Leading to better efficiency, improved performance and less wind noise) and around 10% lighter than the original S-Class. This particular 1989 S-Class is a Series II W126, which came with further improvements - Visual changes, larger V8 engines and the ‘Gullydeckelfelge’ (German for manhole-cover wheel rim) alloy wheels.
And not all W126’s are created equal - Originally supplied by London Road Garage in Essex this 500SEL offers a fantastic V8, Long wheelbase, beautiful colourway and an extremely rare, genuine Lorinser bodykit. The ultimate cruiser with an exceptional service history, recent underside restoration and it’s most recent owner since 1997.
Exterior
The exterior and bodywork of the vehicle is in good condition for age and mileage of the vehicle. The paintwork is bright in most places, and without any major scuffs or dents. Most brightwork is in good condition with the exception of the front bumper trim and rear bumper trim which is starting to show signs of corrosion. Some small bubbling beginning on one rear arch and the leading edge of the front arches. Overall presentable for age and mileage, but can be improved if preferred by the new owner. Recent underside restoration in 2023. All Lorinser genuined marking present showing authenticity of kit.
Interior
The interior is in exceptional condition for age and mileage, showing very little signs of wear. All electrics work as expected, including central locking, windows, sunroof etc. Headunit does not operate currently, and 1 centre console trim is missing. The car has the optional ‘Infinity Kappa’ stereo system fitted.
Mechanical
The Mercedes M117 5. 0L V8 has a fantastic reputation and I can see why - I’ve personally driven this car for 2 hours / 100 miles, and it has been an absolute pleasure (Unsurprising given the mechanical care this car has received throughout it’s life which you can see below!). It fires into life, pulls smoothly, shifts gears as expected and all gauges / dials operate. An absolute joy to drive like any classic V8 Mercedes.
