Lot 122

c. 1967 'Matchless 750cc Special Scrambler'
Registration no. not registered
Frame no. HH071472 (see text)
Engine no. P11/ 122785 (see text) (Gearbox no. P11 9723 (see text))
According to factory records held by the AJS & Matchless Owners' Club, engine number 'P11/ 122785' formed part of a machine despatched to Berliners Motor Co (USA) on 27th June 1967, though the frame is a mystery ('HH071472' is not an AMC number) and the gearbox is a replacement that does not correlate with the engine number. It should be noted that the last digit of the engine number appears to be a factory over-stamp ('5' over '6' or vice versa). Interestingly, engine number ending '6' was despatched to JB Matchless (USA) on 8th August 1967 (JB Matchless was part of Berliners). The rear mudguard carries stickers from the American Historic Motorcycle Racing Association and Speed & Sport Vintage Motorcycles. In view of its major components' non-matching numbers, this motorcycle should be treated as a 'special', and prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves with regard to its originality, authenticity and correctness prior to bidding. Recommissioning will be required before further use (the engine turns over). Sold strictly as viewed, this interesting Matchless off-roader is offered with a State of Colorado Certificate of Title (quoting the engine number in line with US practice). This machine is offered with a NOVA declaration. There is no registration document with this Lot.

All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams Motorcycles website for all pertinent auction information.
