"The Giulietta Spider must have been quite a shock to the other manufacturers of small sports cars when it was first released to the public. Suddenly, there was a new state of the art. With its roll-up windows, excellent ride and delightfully simple top mechanism, the Spider made all the other sporting vehicles of 1955 look terribly dated." - Joe Benson, Alfa Romeo Buyer's Guide.
With the introduction of the Giulietta, Alfa Romeo established the 'small car, big performance' formula that would characterise the Milanese marque's finest offerings from then on. First of the Giuliettas, the Bertone-styled Giulietta Sprint Coupé debuted at the Turin Motor Show in April 1954 powered by a 1. 3-litre, all-alloy version of Alfa's classic twin-cam four designed by one-time Ferrari engineer Giuseppe Busso. Without equal at the time, this wonderful engine produced 80bhp in the regular Spider and 90 horsepower in the Veloce version that followed.
The original 750-Series Giulietta Sprint Coupé of 1954 was soon joined by Berlina and Spider versions. Designed and built by Pininfarina and notable as the famous Turin coachbuilder's first volume-produced car, the Spider brought a level of refinement and mechanical sophistication to small sports cars that made the opposition look dated. The combination of a rev-happy engine, fine-handling, responsive chassis and excellent brakes make these Giuliettas a driver's car par excellence and explains why these stylish Alfa Romeos continue to attract the discerning enthusiast today.
A desirable, high-performance Veloce version of the original 750-Series Giulietta Spider on the passo corto (short wheelbase), this car was delivered new in New York, USA on 4th July 1958. From 1997 onwards the Alfa was owned by one Sandra Lynne in Los Angeles, and during her ownership was restored by Fred Schueddekopp. Our vendor imported the Giulietta into Germany from the USA in 2020 and commissioned a second mechanical restoration from Fernandes Oldtimertechnik in Hamburg, that had cost over 100. 000 euro! Only some 900 kilometres have been covered since the last restoration. The car drives fantastic and brakes and gearbox function as they should. The gearbox in the car is synchronized with the improved Porsche synchronization, which was used for the later Giulietta Veloce 1958 models. The original gearbox with the Borg-Warner synchronization is also functioning and is available at the workshop in Hamburg. Presented in a superb condition, the car is offered with a German registration document; a large file with letters and invoices concerning the repairs/ restoration starting in 1997; and a 2024 document from La Machina del Tempo, Museo Storico Alfa Romeo about the car's original delivery, numbers and colour (Rosso).
