Beautifully presented in black, this example of Jaguar’s XJ-S coupe is powered by the company’s 5. 3-litre V12 HE engine. Matched to a three-speed automatic gearbox, driving the rear wheels, ‘C494 RUF’ was specified superbly when new, combining the subtle black paint with silver pinstriping along the length of the bodywork, complementing the chrome capped wing mirrors and lattice alloy wheels. Inside, the 2+2 configuration cabin is trimmed in a classic combination of cream leather upholstery for the seats and centre console, with black dashboard inlayed with wood veneer. Period details such as the two-spoke steering wheel and T-shaped gear selector are also present.
Described by the vendor – just the third in more than 38 years, two of which from the same family – as being in the top 10% of this model on the market, ‘C494 RUF’ is understandably therefore described as being in ‘excellent’ condition throughout; this covers the engine, transmission, bodywork, paint, electrics, and interior. The exceptionally low indicated mileage is just 29, 100 miles, helping explain the fine condition, though it has also been cherished throughout its time on the road. Largely original and unrestored, this XJ-S was undersealed from new, and dry stored throughout its life. An MOT in May revealed no advisories, and work as part of a recent service includes new spark plugs, oil, filters, as well as a new headlining. Other maintenance work over the past few years includes updated suspension and steering rack bushes. The original features include safety messaging, original book packs, and exhaust system.

First outlined by Malcom Sayer - the designer whose portfolio also includes this car’s predecessor, the E-Type - the Jaguar XJ-S was noted for its prominent rear buttresses. Sayer unfortunately died in 1970 before the design was finalised, and although initial reactions were mixed when the car was unveiled in 1975, it’s fair to say that time has been kind to it, with good examples now keenly sought after. At launch, the XJ-S was only offered with Jaguar’s 5. 2-litre V12, but over the years this was replaced with the HE (High-Efficiency) V12, and the addition of a 3. 6-litre straight-six. Under Ford’s ownership, the hyphen disappeared from the nameplate, and the facelift XJS debuted in 1991 with a number of subtle design changes. The original coupe model was also joined by the option of a targa, and then a full convertible in later years. Production lasted until 1996, when Jaguar replaced the XJS with the XK8.
