10 years ago, the world of adventure bikes experienced the birth of a revolutionary new motorcycle – the GP450 Adventure. The adventure bike sector was dominated by large capacity, heavyweight motorcycles that offered the excitement of discovering remote lands on two wheels, however the reality for most normal riders meant that getting off the beaten track was a pipe dream given the weight and complexity.
Enter the GP450 – a featherweight motorcycle weighing in at just 130kg, and with 4 different seat heights, the bike appealed to male and female riders of all shapes, sizes and very importantly ages. It was CCM’s revolutionary bonded alloy frame, tested in motocross and making the GP incredibly strong and a world first.
The first bikes left the factory in November 2014 however the bike that really put the diminutive adventure machine on the map was run in and shipped to Argentina, its owner following the world’s most challenging motorsport event, the Dakar Rally. Kelston shared images of his exploits from the Andean mountains, Atacama Desert, Uyuni Salt flats, silencing the bike’s critics who said that a lightweight 450cc wasn’t up to the task of global adventure machine.
Numerous exploits followed on the Transamerica Trail, expeditions into Africa and the ultimate adventure, a global circumnavigation. Before the series came to a premature end due to taxing new homologation regulations, the GP450 had its last hurrah with a band of British military brothers, attempting to ride unsupported from Ushaia at the bottom of South America o Prudhoe Bay at the top of North America – via the notoriously impregnable Darien Gap.
Six GP450s set off from Argentina in March 2017, concluding in the North of Alaska 77 days and over 23000 miles later, having tackled searing deserts, jungles, deep snow, poisonous snakes and giant craters in Mexico. Sadly, orders came through ordering the team to avoid the dangerous Darien Gap due to the threat of kidnapping gangs however they had accomplished an amazing feat and gave the GP its final swansong.
CCM produced a very limited run of 25 x SR models with the very last GP450 rolling off the line in the Summer of 2017.
Until now that is! This unique machine was constructed by CCM Founder Alan Clews' youngest Son, Russell Clews, the ultimate GP450, and the only bike to feature a black anodised frame and special decal set.
