Description

1934 Singer Le Mans AYK561 – First owner Jodie Kidd's Grandfather

Motorsport History
Introducing AYK561, a 1934 Singer Le Mans with notable provenance; a car from the golden era of British motorsport that has been meticulously restored to its former glory.

Heritage
The first owner of AYK561 was none other than Sir John Hodge, the grandfather of model and racing enthusiast Jodie Kidd. Sir John campaigned this very car in some of the most famous events of its time, including:
• Donnington Park, 12th May 1934
• Brooklands, 21st May 1934 (Whit Monday) – Competing in no less than ten races
• Brooklands Stanley Cup, 7th July 1934
• Greenford Dirt Track – Testing

Sir John's passion for racing extended beyond the track. Correspondence from the legendary Rivers Fletcher highlights his admiration for the car and reveals that Sir John initially planned to convert AYK561 into a streamlined racer. However, fate led him to exchange the car before realising his vision.

A Remarkable Restoration Journey
In 1988 the car was discovered by Russ Clarke of Southport, who acquired it in a highly original but unrestored state from David Hallam of Sheffield. Despite needing significant mechanical work, the body and ash frame were found in superb condition, making it the perfect candidate for a restoration that was then documented in the Singer Owners Club magazine.

By 1989, with a growing family and limited time, Russ passed AYK561 to Jeremy Parker of Preston, a prominent member of the Preston and District Vintage Car Club (P&DVCC). Jeremy, a family friend, took on the challenge of restoring AYK561 to its former glory, utilising expert craftsmen such as Steve Grundy for the interior, tonneau, and hood. Remarkably, these original restorations are still in superb condition today.
Since Jeremy's stewardship, AYK561 has undergone further significant mechanical restoration. A full engine rebuild was completed in 2016, followed by a steering box overhaul in 2019. In addition, the car has received fresh paintwork, re-chroming, detailed finishing, and new tires since 2020. Every detail has been attended to, ensuring AYK561 is not only visually stunning but also mechanically robust.

Our Thoughts
AYK561 is without a doubt one of the finest examples of the Singer 9 Le Mans available anywhere in the world. It offers a perfect combination of historical significance, notable provenance, and a level of restoration that sets it apart from others in its class. This is not just a car; it’s a piece of British motorsport history, beautifully preserved and ready to be enjoy.
