The Bolesworth Castle September 2024 Classic & Performance Car Auction
Sunday, 22nd September 2024
Registration - PLE 430E
Chassis No. - 80002215/ A
M. O. T. - April 2025
Odometer - 48, 728
This regal Rover P5 has enjoyed a suitably cosseted life. The odometer reads 48, 728 miles and the vendor reports it has covered just over 2, 000 miles in the past 12 years. A favourite of the British government in the 1970s and 1980s, its 3. 0-litre six-cylinder engine is described as being in ‘excellent’ condition, as are the transmission and electrics. The interior is also said to be ‘excellent’, following a recent professional leather retrim to a very high standard. It even has the original radio and dealer sticker in the back window, along with gorgeous Connelly hide upholstery.
‘PLE430E’ is tremendously original and resplendent in royal-looking blue paint. It has radial tyres with plenty of tread, and the vendor reports it benefitted from a substantial restoration 18 years ago, “since when it has covered only 600 miles… much money was spent on the car, the bodywork alone costing over £6, 700, with numerous other bills for work to the engine, brakes, suspension and fitment of a stainless steel exhaust”. The low mileage in the intervening years is because it was purchased in 2011 by Birmingham’s Sutch brothers to join their collection. The vendor acquired it in 2016 and carried out extensive recommissioning work. It has been garaged, and the history includes plenty of invoices and old MOTs. It has a current MOT, which is valid until April 2025.
The Rover P5 represented a major step for the Solihull firm. Introduced in 1958, it was Rover’s first car with unitary bodywork, which was designed by David Bache. The cars were marketed under the names Rover 3 Litre and Rover 3. 5 Litre, respectively representing their straight six and V8 engines. Meticulously engineered, these cars later became a favourite of British Prime Ministers including Harold Wilson and Margart Thatcher – and even the late Queen owned several Rover P5s for her personal motoring.
• Highly original 1967 Rover P5
• Received a significant restoration 18 years ago
• Previously part of a private collection with few miles covered in recent years
