One of fewer than 40 Alvis TD21 drophead coupés known to survive, this automatic transmission model was delivered new to Brooklands of Bond Street, London W1 on 23rd November 1959 and was first owned by M H Arnold Esq of Richmond, Surrey. The previous owner, since deceased, purchased '34 MPF' through renowned marque specialists Red Triangle in 2002. Red Triangle were offering the Alvis on behalf of the then owner, but unfortunately the engine failed before the car could be delivered. Undeterred, the new owner commissioned Red Triangle to undertake a comprehensive restoration. Works carried out included repairs to the wooden body frame; restoration of the bodywork; and a full engine overhaul including conversion to unleaded compatibility. Considerable other mechanical refurbishment was carried out including works to the brakes and suspension, the latter being upgraded with a handling kit. The Alvis also received a full repaint; refreshed interior; new mohair hood, and much more besides. Related invoices contained within the huge history file total over £26, 000. Following completion the TD21 went on to finish 1st in the Motor Car class at the Cromer Carnival and 2nd at the Wimpole Hall post-war class.
The car is finished in Midnight Blue with grey leather interior and a blue mohair hood, and has been well maintained since the restoration. According to our vendor, the Alvis is very comfortable and drives beautifully with no overheating problems and excellent oil pressure. A Kenlowe cooling fan; chrome wire wheels; and a radiator rebuilt but retaining its original brass plates are the only modifications notified. The car is reported to have enjoyed a movie career: believed to have appeared in A Rather English Marriage (1998) and Mad Cows (1999).
The aforementioned history file also contains records of further expenditure on improvements and servicing; approximately 20 old MOT certificates; copies of factory records and early correspondence; previous logbooks; a current V5C document; and a logbook from Red Triangle documenting recent services. Comprehensively restored by the pre-eminent marque specialists, this ultra-rare TD21 drophead is an opportunity not to be missed.
