Description
1938 Rolls Royce 25/ 30 Hooper Sports Saloon Non Division
Chassis Number: GAR73
Registration Number: 897XUM
This lovely and stylish Rolls-Royce 25/ 30 Close Coupled Saloon by Hooper was delivered to the first owner Mrs Jarrett Thorpe of Hucclecote, near Gloucester on 5th March 1938. According to the Rolls-Royce records kept with the RREC Mrs Thorpe kept the car for sixteen years with it being acquired by the second owner, a Dr. Huw. D. Walters of Llangadog, Carmarthenshire in August 1954. In the 1950’s and 60’s Dr. Walters built up a collection of about twelve pre-war cars. The previous owner’s late father, who lived in Llangadog, purchased this 25/ 30 with a couple of other cars from Dr. Walters in the late 1980’s. Clearly this ‘owner driver’ Rolls-Royce has always been very well maintained
Low ownership & recently disinterred from long term storage. This is a very original car with a lovely feel of authenticity to it. The car is finished outside in three tones of grey paint in generally good order that suits the body lines of the car very well.
To the interior is original grey bedford cord in lightly patinated but good order. an assortment of the large tools are to be found in the boot. Being a non division car it is well suited to the taller driver with comfortable accomodations up front & to the rear.
There is a large sunroof that has had at some time a bead of sealer run across the front but could be easily re-instated. Occasional tables fold out of the seat backs for the use of the rear occupants. Original Ace wheel discs are fitted all round & colour coded to the body paint. The interior woodwork is well figured walnut with a matt satin finish as it left Hoopers factory. It extends to the doot tops as well as to the dash board.
Very little paperwork comes with the car other then the V5c document & the Rolls Royce chassis records. The car fires up easily & runs & drives well. The throttle linkage is slightly sticky & really the car would benefit from a full service includng fluid changes, valve settings & a thorough lubrication of all moving parts. The need for this is reflected in the price of the car.
The engine runs quietly, starts easily & has good power & no blue smoke. The gear box is likewise a pleasure to use & feels as though it has covered comparatively few miles during its life. Indicated maileage is 82, 000 which may well be the total mileage covered from new.
Being a 25/ 30 model it is long legged & cruises well at modern speeds. Viewings are by appointment in the Wirral.
