Description
We are feeling very lucky to have the opportunity to find a new home for this beautiful 101 Series Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider. Without doubt the nicest of it’s type we’ve had the pleasure of seeing. Although left hand drive this example was supplied new to Jersey on the 1st October 1963 as a 1600 Normale and has had just 4 owners from new. She remained in Jersey, staying with the Churchill family, until June 1982, when the 2nd owner took over custodianship. He only kept her until 1984, when owner number 3 a Mr. Carlos Ragazzi bought her. With him she remained until selling to the current mainland UK based owner in 2015.
Upon buying her what began as a light tidy up turned into a full blown 2 year rebuild, carried out by the owner’s company, Mithril Racing, in their spare time. The body was stripped to a bare shell and the restoration of this was carried out by a respected local body shop to a very high standard, still presenting almost ‘box fresh’ today, some 7 years since completion.
A large A4 history file accompanies her, this includes invoices dating back to 1982, UK import & registration papers, the V5C showing the only 1 registered UK owner, a CD photo documenting the restoration. Also on file are various letters, including one dated 28th June 1982 from the original owner confirming to the 2nd owner that he & his immediate family are the only owners and that he verified the mileage at that time. Another to the current owner from the last long term owner talking about trips to Italy in the car and discussing the car in general, along with some photos of his time with the car. This kind of documentation is priceless, and a real rarity that makes for enjoyable reading. The final important document is the cars Jersey Registration Book, documenting ownership & registration number changes and the original date of registration.
As can be seen from the photos this was a no expense spared ‘top to bottom’ rebuild. The major aspects included:
1. Rotisserie body restoration with all rust being cut out, new panels either bought or fabricated and welded in place followed by a full repaint inside, outside & underneath in the original colour.
2. Compete suspension rebuild with all components being stripped, shot blasted, powder coated, replated, new bushes etc.
3. 4x new Koni shock absorbers.
4 . Differential rebuild.
5. Classic Alfa handling kit.
6. Brakes stripped, refurbished & rebuilt.
7. Engine stripped & rebuilt using all new pistons, liners etc.
8. Engine converted to Veloce spec with new twin Weber carburettors.
9. Wheels restored and fitted with new period correct Michelin tyres.
10. Complete interior retrim, new rubber floor & boot mats.
11. New soft top roof.
12. All chrome work either restored or replaced.
13. New exhaust system.
This is just the tip of the iceberg, all the small details were given the same treatment. Even the original radio aerial that winds up & down using a handle under the dash was stripped down, restored and is in fully functioning order though the owner elected not to fit a radio as he only ever drove with the roof down listening to the exhaust burbling away with that familiar Alfa twin cam note!
Also with the car are all the parts to convert her back to the original Normale single carb spec, along with numerous other original parts that were deemed not good enough for the standard the owner required. She also has a rather useful black tonneau cover to protect the cabin when all that is required is to keep the sun or light showers out of cabin.
The pictures speak for themselves with this car, I encourage early viewing as she surely won’t hang around for long.
