Making its debut at the 1951 Frankfurt Motor Show, the BMW 501 was the German automaker’s first all-new model following the conclusion of World War II
With its soft curves and swooping lines, the 501 earned the nickname 'Barockengel', or 'baroque angel' sharing the aesthetic qualities of the contemporary 'artistic movement'
It featured an all-new platform with a perimeter frame, double A-arm front suspension with torsion bar springs and a live axle at the rear
Initially offered as a saloon, cabriolet and coupé, it was renamed the 501/ 3 a year later after gaining a larger inline-six
Alongside this updated model, BMW sold a version called the 501-8 with a 2. 6-litre V8 engine shared with the more luxurious 502
Dating from the final year of production, the V8-engined 501 four-door offered here appears to have been first UK-registered in 1975
It was sourced and imported from Sweden by our vendor around four years ago
It appears to be largely original and remains cosmetically untouched, although we understand it's in good mechanical order and was driven to Paris and back by our vendor in 2022
A time-warp example of a rare model that can be enjoyed 'as is', or perhaps fully refurbished and taken to the next level over a period of time
