One of the great French sporting voiturettes
Found in South Africa in 1982
Restored in the UK in 1997
Little used since completion
Introduced in 1924, the 1, 074cc Amilcar CGS was by far the French manufacturer's most successful model, effectively establishing its reputation worldwide. Production continued through 1929 with continuous improvements made to a design of proven performance and reliability. Mostly fitted with two-seat bodywork (in aluminium at extra cost), the CGS afforded owners the opportunity to enter local competitions, proving highly successful. Indeed, so popular was the Amilcar CGS that it was built under license in Italy, Germany, and Austria, and sold in the USA by no less than Maybach Motors in New York City.
This well-travelled Amilcar CGS was found in a poor state in South Africa in 1982. The current vendor purchased the car on an onion farm in Franshoek, a place founded by French settlers, one of whom may have brought it back from France. In 1997 the car was brought to the UK to be restored.
The chassis, engine, transmission, axles and steering gear are all believed to be original. A reproduction Duval-style body was fitted after the chassis, engine, and transmission had been overhauled and a new fuel tank installed. The car has covered very few miles since completion and was not UK registered until 2018. A high-torque starter motor and flashing indicators are the only notified modifications from factory specification, and it should be noted that the dynamo is not fitted. Offered with a V5C Registration Certificate.
