Description

For sale, through JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, Land Rover® Series 2a Ragtop in Marine Blue (1962).

Petrol 2286cc. MOT and Tax Exempt. Seven Seats including driver. Weber Carburettor. Heater with demist. Sun Visors. Free Wheeling Hubs. 12V Charging Socket. Rear Mudflaps. Rear Step.

We are delighted to present for sale this early. Land Rover® Series 2a, in popular ragtop configuration, which we have had the pleasure of selling before in 2018. Due to a change of circumstances for the current owner, we are now able to offer this vehicle for sale once again. This vehicle still sports the ‘three letters, three numbers’ registration of pre-1964 vehicles, which is now becoming increasingly desirable amongst enthusiasts. This is because the registration is dateless – we don’t often have vehicles this early with such a good numberplate, and we get asked for these more and more!

Externally, the vehicle is very ‘stock’ – the wing-top mounted mirrors, rear grab handles, vintage number plates, recent canvas, rear mud flaps and rear step all compliment this look well – it looks just as it should with no nasty additions – the only notable modern feature being the 700 tyres (slightly bigger than normal for additional gearing with the period look) and the towball and electrics to allow towing – a handy feature to have. The paintwork is of a good standard, better than we see normally – evidence of a spray painted finish in times’ past. We think it looks just as it should, and hope that a new keeper would agree.

The standard feel extends to the interior – there are three front standard seats, with deluxe matting to the footwells. There is a heater fitted with front demist – a very expensive and desirable option both in the time (and today!) to prevent freezing up on the coldest days. There are lots of nice period features too such as the “banjo” steering wheel – replaced with a bakelite variant later in production. The rear is unfitted, with the exception of a load mat to the floor to protect against scratches, and the spare wheel is stowed in the correct place behind the bulkhead. If desired, this Series could seat another 4 people with twin bench seats costing £595 fitted – meaning seven occupants including the driver. There is a 12v socket to charge phones on the passenger side, which is a welcome and handy addition.

Out on the road, this old girl drives just as she should – delivering a pleasing period experience with a little more verve thanks to the uprated Weber carburettor and the slightly larger rubber giving a more comfortable cruise. The free wheeling hubs aid fuel economy slightly too, whilst protecting against axle wear and accidental 4×4 selection. We really enjoy a period drive like this – bringing the focus back to what made these Series 2s so enjoyable the first time around.

In summary, if you are looking for a classic Land Rover® that can carry all the family, then this could be for you. With the period looks and experience, aided slightly by the modern additions made, this should prove to be both a solid investment and a car ready for work or play. The added bonus of MOT & Tax Exemption, the rare (and valuable) 3 digit, three letter numberplate and classic insurance, it should prove cheap to own long-term whilst holding its value and appreciating over time. We’ve grown fond of this vehicle – it is lovely to see such a period looking (and driving) Series 2a!
