Interior & Equipment
The original specification maroon interior is striking when opening the door of this Riley. The original leather is in great order with some subtle signs of aging as to be expected. The matching maroon carpet is in great condition throughout with no rips or marks.
The highly polished woodwork presents beautifully, re-finished in 1998 and still with no signs of aging or cracking. The original contrasting head lining is taught and in exceptional order. The original chrome ring Jaeger instrument gauges all work perfectly and look stunning complimented by the original banjo bakelite steering wheel. All original electrical switches work as they were intended as does the Smiths heater... A true gentlemans cockpit, simply beautiful
Exterior
According to Nicholas Clarke one of the family members the original body went under 'full renovation’ in 1995 after 20 years of storage and completed 1998. All panels removed and painted in their own bodyshop, no major work such as welding involved just purely refreshing the black paintwork. The paintwork today is in a stellar condition with little age related marks, a testament to the skilled work that went into it twenty five years ago. The bright work around the car is beautiful and withholds a stunning shine.
All glass panels around the vehicle show no signs of aging, crystal clear with no hints of any delamination. Each door closure is flush, with factory panel fit and outstanding lines and gaps.
The original black vinyl roof presents beautifully and is in outstanding order. Finally not forgetting those traditional trafficators that work excellently consisting of a nice amber glow when in operation... Stunning

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes
The original steel wheels are finished in gloss black with chrome wheel rim finishers in fantastic condition with minimal signs of aging. Fitted with all matching excellent Michelin Radial 185 R 16 92S Tyres.
The fully overhauled brake system is excellent, she pulls up with ease and perfectly straight.
Engine & Transmission
The 1496cc 1. 5L straight four engine is near silent in operation. Being owned by a Rootes Gargae Director servicing has been thorough and comprehensive. On the road she performs strongly easiley keeping up with modern traffic. The 4 speed gearbox selects perfectly and with ease, the clutch is light and progressive. Starting is a dream, hot or cold she starts on the button and idles perfectly.
The engine bay is beautifully presented.
Summary
First registered and supplied by Clarke Bros. Services Ltd a Rootes Group Main Agent in Peterborough 9th April 1954 and still supports its original registration mark CFL 268 and their metal tag remains on display on the dashboard.
The first owner was Mr Algernon Clifton Clarke (Cliff Clarke) a Director of Clarke Bros. Services Ltd. The Clarke family owned this lovely RME from new in 1954 through to 2016. A 14 page documented history of the car, the family and the garage with supporting photographs from 1954 to 2020 makes truly wonderful reading regarding this cars cherished life.
The displayed mileage of 44532 appears to original based on the vast information documented in the history file.
The history file also documents extensive recommissioning in 2018 at a cost of circa £8500. Works instructed to Blue Diamond Riley Services Limited, including brake and electrical overhaul, suspension bushes, kingpins etc etc. Past mot certificates, old registration documents, past tax discs, service and maintenance invoices, plus many historic newspaper cuttings of the Riley RME, the Clarke family and their garages.
This is an unrepeatable opportunity to own possibly one of the nicest and original Riley RME's in the country. Family owned for 62 years, extensive documented history and only 4 previous keepers.
